Daycare teacher sleeping on the job...

a stupid comment from the article -
So he takes her picture? What the heck was he thinking? What if she had had a stroke or heart attack, and seconds could have saved her life? But instead he takes her picture? jfc, what a jerk. I'm glad she was just asleep, but really, you take her picture?

was they100% sure or just had eyes closed there must been more than one teacher or helper in class if not then that was wrong

Did you watch the video? I'm 100% sure she was sleeping. She had to wipe the drool off her face when I woke her up.

I may get death threat if said anything...sometimes bad things happen to good people...falling asleep driving is one

NitroHonda - how did this whole thing come about?

1. You walked by at the daycare center to check on your son.
2. You saw her sleeping on job.
3. You took a picture of her sleeping on the job.
4. You yelled HEY!!! HEY!!! HEY!!!
5. She finally woke up.

how did that end up in news? and why?

The newscast and article really does miss a lot of the story but the picture is why. Social media. I posted this on my Facebook page and from there... Got put on the local news and then now found myself looking at it on national news yesterday.

Son was enrolled into this daycare on Monday the 17th. I was out of town all week. Mother of my son told me that she had some concerns about the daycare. She was seeing some red flags. I flew back into town on Thursday and dropped into the daycare to take a look see. My visit wasn't a "surprise" as the mother of the my son called them and told them I would be stopping by for a tour. Arrived... Nobody at the front desk. Finally somebody came back and I told her who I was. Wanted to walk around and look at your facility and see what's up with where my kid is. She said that she was too busy and told me to fel free to walk around. So I did. That's when I Caught her sleeping. Told the teacher in the classroom across from hers and she put her arms up and said "go tell the director". I took the pictures and shouted to her three times to wake her up. When I did wake her up, I left to go get the director. I told the director that she was sleeping. She got real snotty with me and said no she wasn't. Showed her the picture. Boy... She shut up fast. She asked me to text her the picture so I did. She was very apologetic. I kept my cool and just asked her to finish the tour of your facility.

We were both very sympathetic as this teacher has diabetes and was on a change of medication. My issue is that she isn't healthy enough to be taking care if a classroom full of 3 year olds. During snack time especially. The classroom was a bit rowdy too. The director's text response to me was not professionally done. The leadership on that facility is not apt to take care of my child. Not on my dime.

Regardless what they say, you did the right thing. No one should be sleeping on the job whether it's an accident or not in a room full of 3 year olds. Anything could have happened, someone choking on a piece of food, get hurt or anything. Kids that age need to be watched at all times. If you hadn't shown up, who knows how long she would have been sleeping.

I don't know the details of the investigation but in general:

1. No one should be sleeping on the job, any job, much less one where children are involved.

2. Every parent has the right to make unannounced visits to a daycare or school.

3. A daycare supervisor of little ones shouldn't even "rest her eyes;" closed eyes are unobservant eyes; little kids move fast into danger zones.

4. Threats from commenters are totally uncalled for and frightening.

I would not put my kids in the daycare if teachers are sleeping. Apparently that the director wasn't pay attnetion to those workers. THat is a red flag.

I want to explain something... I came and posted this here because I've tossed and turned over this. Seeing myself on news in other cities and... reading the comments on the KXAN Facebook news feed... Really made me question myself. Did I do the right thing? No? A lot of people think I didn't. My friends are behind me on my fb page but the public? Not so much. I wanted to get an impartial opinion from you guys. Y'all are straight up so it'll give me perspective.

The media can be harsh. The public has not been in your shoes. They don't know what you have seen and a lot of them don't understand how scary it is to leave a 3 year old alone even for a minute, let alone a room full of 3 year olds.

There will always be a few jerks that see things differently and spoil the bunch.

Stick to your guns. You stood up for what you believe in and alot of people are behind you in this.

I would had picked up my kid up and taken him home and find another day care. I went to pick up my daughter at her school and she was coming out of the bathroom and some boys where holding the door closed while my daughter fingers where getting hurt in the door ! I pushed the boys away and got my daughter and found a new school . The principle of the old school was upset that I was pulling my child out of her school because she would lose state funding . I could had given a crap , my child safety came first, and the school did not do their job and I was not going let my child stay at the school while they tried to get their act together.
I am surprise the day care is still open , they should given only one chance
to make sure the school is safe for the kids. If they can't get it right the second time shut them down. They're caring for children and there should no excuses for people falling asleep on the job. Having a medical crisis can't be help so there should be two people with the children at all times.

I think its a good way for waking up other daycare agency as well. SO they would take it more seriously to focus on kids safety.

I think You did the rigth thing by showing out that parents didnt know. What the parents need to know that the teachers would watch kids completely. Why did your friends tell you that you arent ding the right thing? care to explain here.

Stand your ground, Nitro....you did the right thing...Here in my city, we have a news anchor that goes by Daycare Centers...(surprise visits)...to see how they are operating...and a lot of them have been closed down by DCF or cited for infractions....

You are paying $$ to have them care for your child...so it's their responsibility to do so. Whether this Lady just fell asleep or an reaction(s) to medication....is not relevant....She was Not Doing Her Job and the children were in danger...I would take my child out of there immediately.

This is one of the reasons why many Parents are reluctant to put their child into a Day Care Facility....and a lot of parents choose to stay home with their children, or have another family member take care of them.

Ignore the Bigots!...When it comes to the safety and welfare of your child....you did the right thing...

Oh wow, I wish that elementary school offer preschool classes for toddlers instead of sending toddlers into daycare.

The class should have more than one staff to monitor the kids.

yep. the newspaper wrote an article about me and it's not what I said so the message wasn't conveyed the way I thought it would go. that's how media is...

anyway - you did the right thing and it's just unfortunate that the public response was harsh but hey... it's internet... lotta of haters, trolls, and armchair parents.

based on comments I read from the site, most of supportive responses for you are written by real parents with real children.

Im actually glad nitro took action and made sure his son is in good hands. We have too much careless daycare deaths that would have been avoided.

You did the right thing.

Many years ago I worked at a residential facility for developmentally disabled kids & adults. In the building I worked in, one year several third shift staff were caught napping by the campus security. The shift supervisor if I recall was one of the sleepers too. He and at least 3 other staff members were fired on the spot for sleeping on the job. You don't DO that when you are in a position of caring for individuals whether it be as a teacher, RLS, hospital aide, nurse or anything. That puts the folks being cared for or watched over in jeopardy (especially if your 'charges' have multiple behavior issues and could/do run out of the building or are extremely aggressive).

So stick to your guns. Her having health issues does throw a monkey wrench into it but it is not necessarily a good excuse either and it is HER responsibility to deal with it and either take a bit of time off to try to adjust the meds or work with the director/whomever to adjust the situation so that something like this does not happen.
