I’m in my last class, Deaf Culture, which upon completion I receive my American Sign Language certificate. I would like to inform readers that Deaf Culture is being taught by a new deaf instructor from McDaniel College, Eddie Laird.

We discussed issues like mainstreaming, bilingual education and hearing agenda/deaf agenda. Most of the deaf classes are taught by a deaf instructor without the use of an interpreter and this holds true even for the ASL beginning students. This challenge may entice students, especially those who continue with the certificate program.

ASL has a history of shared oppression that many in the deaf community value and becomes the central core that the deaf identify with as part of their culture. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the film, “The Preservation of Sign Language.” George Veditz produced the film of “storytellers” done in its natural style to capture its beauty. One thing all languages have in common, whether signed or spoken, is that they will change over time.

So, if you’re asking why I’m writing when there seems to be no threat to the deaf here in Frederick, let me begin by praising the governing leadership for extolling the deaf community’s advocacy rights. As a citizen of Frederick, I’m proud to be a part of a progressive society that is a unique determinant that sets us apart from other cities.

I may be a member of the hearing population, but I refuse to have the mindset of an oppressor. Instead, I’m an ally that stands informed about the controversial aspects of deaf culture.
