A GROUP that aims to provide support for deaf children and their families in Leigh has met for the first time.

The Wigan and Leigh Deaf Children’s Society got together coffee and provided entertainment for children from 15 families at Our Lady’s Primary School in Aspull.

“There was real enthusiasm for the group,” said chairman Katie O’Reilly.

“With the support of everyone who turned up we are sure we will make a great success of the group. It was great to see so many professionals turn up to offer their support.”

Most deaf children in Leigh will go to a mainstream school where they will often be the only deaf child. The society’s goal is provide regular activities and events for those children so they grow up knowing others just like themselves.

It will also provide support to newly-diagnosed deaf children and their families as most are born into families with no experience of hearing loss.

At the first meeting Emma Sumner from the National Deaf Children’s Society and local teachers who specialise in helping deaf children met with the families.

“A big thanks to all our volunteers for entertaining the kids,” said Jodie Telford, Vice Chairman and Events Organiser. “They had a great morning while the parents had a really informative and useful session.

“We know there are plenty more deaf children in the Wigan borough. If anyone would like to get involved we would be delighted to hear from you.”

The next meeting is at 7pm on May 2 at The Abraham Guest Academy.

The society website is wldcs.org.uk and you can email them at WiganLeighDCS@outlook.com
