I don't know why I do this. I run across a very catchy song, and it has certain rhythmic/tonal hooks that just grab me like barbs with reverse hooks. I end up playing the same song over and over, sometimes for 700-1,000 times over a seven-month period. It's like hearing particular passages makes me think of someone, something, experience a particular feeling, and I want to keep going back and doing it. I'm very PICKY about what I listen to.

An example right now is Sacudiendo a Yaca by Axé Bahia - [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji5C6Jf0YsU&feature=related]YouTube - Axé Bahia - Sacudiendo a Yaca[/ame]

Any ideas on why I'm doing this?

Stephanie

I'm still haunted by the repetitive tune from the Disney's ride "It's a small world after all...." right down to the end of the tunnel.

Brrrr......

Ugh... GUIDOS!!! *runs for my life*

You should try listening to Daft Punk. That's good music. Not many words, but mostly music (techno music) and a lot of beat. :)

Wirelessly posted

I hate "Around the World."

Ah screw you, Vampy. Now it's going to be stuck in my head all day.

Maybe it is some kind of primal thing you gotta figure out, lol.

I can figure out one thing. This is a Hispanic or Portuguese song, and it's making me think of someone I really like. I mean like, like, you know? And I say that because she gave me a very nice poem she's shared recently with people, and it was a poem about a part of her family having lived in the Valley in south Texas until they moved to Austin so the kids could go to school. I can't fall in love with her because there are things about our lives that would make it difficult.

The bass line happening mainly on upbeats, the chop-chop vocals, the little fast drum fills before the phrasings...

It is a primal thing. It's satisfying something inside. I just feel good when I hear it. Thing is, after a few weeks to a few months, I finally hear it enough that I get it out of my system. Sometimes, I'm up way past midnight listening to it.

Hey, don't feel bad. You're not alone because I have the same problem. I hear a song that's catchy and it will play in my head constantly until I learn to play it on my bass or guitar. Even after that it still plays on. I "hear" songs in my head that I heard 10, 20 even 30 years ago. So I guess it's just part of our basic makeup as musicians that we keep music that we like in our......"mental file", if you will. Enjoy it and let your artistic expression flow with it. After all, it IS a primal thing :)

They are called "brain worms" and you are absolutely correct that it is an uncontrolled creative response. Well known in musicians.

I will have to ask my nephew and my sister about that. They're both Music majors.

It is something I learned about when researching musical hallucinations in the late deafened. If you are interested, Oliver Saks has an excellent book on the topic called "Musicophilia."

Brain Worms. A very apt description. :cool2: Hope all is going well with you, Deafdrummer. Still hoping we can get together and jam one day. Keep on rocking!

*Starts looking for his brain worms to see if they have names yet.*

I hate it when I look like a fool!
I like that song and most of music/songs that can pop-into my head. I am very fortunate.
