Question problems with accessing support serices in nz

Hi

Im having problems even getting the local deaf ed serices to talk me.

First they say we dont have your notes but I no they were sent. Is it worth me going into the local special ed office and handing them my notes my self?

Im oral can I still get sign support as this would maske school easier?

If you can then get a receipt for proof.

If you are oral, how will sign support help?

Culturally and as part of my identity. And also the fact I don't also process full sentences.

It's great to see another Kiwi in AllDeaf as I'm a Kiwi too.

I'm not sure if you are in University or Polytech.

If you are an University Student, the disability services at university would have contacted (if you did added in information on application forms when you were applying a course for University last year, that you are Deaf and need disability services to contact you) you via email to arrange appointment for you to meet them and explain what you need for support in University (ie: NZSL interpreter, notetaker, extending time for exams/test etc) before semester one starts.

So for University/polytech, use the Disability services at the University, go meet them in person as soon as possible to sort this out. Not the Deaf Association of NZ (I think it is now called Deaf Aotearoa).

I did go to University/college in New Zealand in the past and had no problem with getting the support services.

Ah, I see.

Are you on IEP? (Individual Education Programme). This is for special needs students assist planning needs for school. Which you can add on NZSL interpreter as well.

Other things comes up to my mind.

Does your high school have Deaf Unit?

If not, do you have Itinerant Teacher? Advisor?

As you do have rights to get more supports that you need in high school.

Im only part time and no i dont have a IEP. I go to a school with a deaf unit and no I dont have an Itinerant teacher or adviser. GSE are saying they dont have my notes. Yet on all the notes it states that the notes were sent to GSE.

I'm surprised you don't have IEP as this what school get extra funding to help with the supports for your needs.

As you do go to school with a Deaf Unit, it is Deaf unit responsible to provide you a part-time interpreter during the time you go to school as you mentioned that you are part time student. (I'm guessing you are a student for Deaf Unit as well?)

You will get it sorted out think positive.
