Sure, minimize loans. I had scholarships, grants, VR and SSI and didn't need any loans. I estimated that I only paid on the order of ten thousand dollars for my BS at RIT and plenty of that was from SSI. That was a good deal because if you were registered with NTID and paid all of current rates and didn't include money from coops, it'd be $100 thousand for 5 years and if you were someone hearing and not registered with NTID, nearly $200 thousand for 5 years.

I recently learned in mortgage world... you have student loans, it will hurt your ability to buy a home. Even if you have nice paying job but you will not be able to buy a home until you pay off your student loans. So my advice - avoid student loans while you can in college. They hurt a lot of newbies rookie house buyer. They cannot get home loan because too much student loans. And another advice - do not stay too long. 4-5 years is ok... not 6,7,8,9 years in BA degree. That will hurt you more than 4-5 years of college. My brother finished his PHD degree and he has 100,000 worth of loans left to pay off. So his wife has PHD too... So he has 200,000 worth of loans to pay off. Its more likely they will never own a home for a long time. And now they are pregnant and due in DEC 2008. |

Congrats, scottw for being accepted at Gally - good luck!
DeafMortgage, it's rather interesting about the student loans and the mortgage loan for the first timers. I didn't know that. hmm Yep, it did the same to both my bro and sis who finished with the PHDs yet ended up with over $100K a piece back in the early 90s. My bro still is paying off his student loans even while not sure about my sis yet. Mine was paid off quite easy within 2 years after departing Gally. It was nearly 20 years ago but felt like it was about ten years. whoa lol I find it rather ironically because I really live off much easier than my sibings do despite their PHDs and higher paying jobs due to their loans including their kids, home mortgages, cars, and etc. So it does take a long time to pay off with what they have to pay for. Just remember that it costs lot more nowadays for the college students than ours did long ago therefore you ought to take an advice from deafmortgage, scottw... but don't let this scare you off. lol |

First thing is you need to do is Pell Grant, Aid Grant, General Scholarship and work study. I got 15,580.00 award is free. But I have 8,681.00 left to go. It not very bad at all. I can put save to bank as long I can save and alot save. Very easy for me to put save a bank till I will graduation. Gallaudet help give me check and pay back to bank. And I give all done paid. I hope. That very easy for you to put save your bank.
![]() If you make up VR can pay for you. I happy for you! Sometime who people VR don't use. That sad! I did that I have complaint file. VR wrong. Not all 28,000.00 no. I got 8,681.00. There is nothing wrong. ![]() |

VR refused to support me during my 4 years at Gallaudet because my parents make too much money. I laughed because my brother was at a hearing university. I read a court case that parents' income are illegal to determine for VR use. And now I'm hearing from other deaf people that VR counselors required an applicant to get SSI or SSDI in order to get VR services. This is illegal because SSI/SSDI are federal entitlements/welfare and VR is a state program. I fought VR to uspport me in graduate school and I won because I appealed for a year with patience.....
A Gallaudet, I worked jobs while most got SSI. My resume was great while most had blank ones with no work experiences except for SBG/clubs/fieldtrips when they graduated.... |

Yup, it did to me the same thing for first two years then I had to declare that I became independent (and of age) by living on my own then finally got more VR support (not full) so it helped at least. Maybe you could try that. VR support vary in the States.

I graduayed from Gallaudet in 1991. It was cheaper back then. Most who got VR also got SSI or SSDI. a cycle of dependency....
Yes, one can go independent but the parents cannot declare you as dependents saving them money... |

I'm not quality for FAFSA due my parent's income is above than equal to them and not quality for VR support because of same thing with my parent's income, I was like WTF at them and try to think about something instead of bother to loan.
I don't have much choice, Gallaudet is only school that I was accepted and meet my need.

Oh, I duh it! Sorry about that. I didn't know about that.
I talked to ADA abou problem with VR. It too late for me closed case appeal paper. I clean my room and throw away. I have no time and deadline after 30 days I think. ADA explain to me. Now, I understand and learn the policy. She know this VR is wrong! woooohooo! But next time I will keep remember. Remember if your VR case appeal paper. Don't throw away. Keep your paper. If you not agree with VR and tell complaint file and talk to ADA. ![]() So, I process to start student Loan now. ![]() |
