Survey on Deaf Education

Hi all,

My name is Cakey James and I am student at the University of Virginia and am enrolled in an ASL course entitled "Women in Deaf Culture." I have had a difficult time contacting local Deaf individuals about completing a survey for me and was hoping that some of you would be so kind as to help me out. If you would prefer for me to email you directly rather than post replies on here please feel to let me know and I will gladly email you the attachment (or feel free to email me at cakeyjames@gmail.com). Thank you so much for all of your help!

The survey is attached.

-Cakey

I would say that 'Cakey' is the most unusual nickname I ever come across. You love cakes????

Mind telling us why you had a difficult time finding some deaf people in VA? I don't know how close University of VA is to Washington, DC. but there are many many deaf people on Maryland side of Washington, D.C.

I already send you my replies to your questions. It seems that college students, who took Deaf Studies, find us here. Yours is the third one I filled out so far.

Well, to answer your questions:

1. My parents gave me the name Cakey (pronounced 'Khaki,' like the pants) as an acronym for my real name. However, most people pronounce it CAKE-y so it certainly does appear as though I do eat a lot of cake (which I am not opposed to).

2. There is a surprisingly decent sized Deaf community in Charlottesville and being as it is my fourth year living here I have met a large portion of the community, mainly through my ASL courses which have all been taught by Deaf professors. However, due to a conflicting class schedule this semester I have been unable to attend any signing suppers and unfortunately don't have ready access to contact information on the Deaf individuals that I am familiar with.

3. It was pure luck that I stumbled across this website. After not having much luck getting in touch with local Deaf community (I was only able to get 2 Deaf individuals to agree to fill out the survey for me), I resorted to finding online Deaf chatrooms.

4. I can not thank you enough for your wonderful reply! You are such a great help for taking time out of your day to fill this out for me. However, I could really use at least 2 more replies so if anyone has about 20 free minutes to fill this survey out for me I would be MOST appreciative. Again, thank you so much for completing the survey for me!

I'm so sorry to keep asking but if anyone (particularly a female, but I will gladly take a male response) would be willing to take just a few minutes to complete this survey I would be SO appreciative. Thank you so much.

Ladies, how about helping her to finish her survey? I have done her survey and she is asking questions not just about Deaf's point of view but about woman's point of view, too.
