I have never experienced what it is like to live in dorms anywhere so cant help u out here! Sorrrrryyy..
Yea, I was residence in Benson, also work there last semester, too many fire alarms...

Ohhhh geez!! yes yes Krug Hall is where I used to reside. I hated that dorm. I would say.. we had 20 (guessing) fire alarms in 1 semester. but I had a GREAT time though..

Now the names have changed.. and things have changed.. I have no clue what's there on the campus anymore.
Yes, Gallaudet changed the dormitory names to Ballard North and Ballard West.

I haven't been to Gallaudet for a while. Some of my friends works at Gallaudet keeps me up to date about what goes on w/ the campus, so and on.

Like Shel said, Gallaudet changed it's name shortly after the murders. From what I know - according to my friends - they said that Gallaudet felt that it would be in the best interest of the University to change it's name and to start anew.

In my opinion, The university should not have changed it's name because it was named after 2 historical figures in the deaf community. On the other hand I do understand that Gallaudet wanted to do the best and to help the students/parents/staff/faculty and alumni to cope with the murder, rather than be reminded of what happened.

I had wondered the same thing too. So I did a bit of searching and found this answer.

Quote:
Named for Melville Ballard (1839-1912)
Melville Ballard, in 1866, became the first undergraduate student to receive a degree from Gallaudet College. Ballard was also a teacher in the Primary Department—later known as the Kendall School—for over 50 years.Melville Ballard was born July 31, 1839, in Fryeburg, Maine. He reportedly lost his hearing in infancy. Though very curious and intelligent, young Ballard had not acquired much language other than home signs created by his hearing family members until he entered the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Conn. at the age of eleven. Ballard graduated from ASD in 1857 and was hired to teach young children at ASD. In 1860, Edward Miner Gallaudet persuaded Ballard to move to Washington, D.C. to teach in the Primary Department.

However, Ballard wanted to pursue higher education and he urged Gallaudet to establish the collegiate programs. As the prospect of the college being established seemed imminent, Ballard “retired” from teaching and in 1864 was the first person to apply to the new college for admission. He was accepted and began a special two-year course of study in September 1864. At that time there had been only one other student accept to the college who ultimately did not attend. There were six students enrolled in preparatory classes who were not officially considered admitted at the college. Therefore, during that first year, Ballard was the college’s only student and he was teasingly referred to as, “The College.” Remarks were made such as “The College has gone to bed.” “The College has gone to the city.” “The College has gone for a stroll.” “The College is dissatisfied with the cafeteria food.”

After Ballard finished his studies, he graduated June 27, 1866 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and returned to teaching at the Kendall School where he remained until his death.
In 1870, he went on to receive a Master of Science degree from Gallaudet. Ballard was warmly regarded by his students and continued to be an influence on them after they left his class. He also taught sign language to hearing graduate students in the Normal School, which started in 1891. He was an animated storyteller and enthralled audiences at his many lectures in Chapel Hall. He was known for his wide range of knowledge on many subjects and his meticulous attention to detail. His particular areas of interest were genealogy and politics and he carefully verified his facts before making conclusions. He was fluent in English, Latin, and French and often would be asked by Congressman General James Garfield to translate documents from the French Emperor, Napoleon III.

In 1871, Ballard and several other men formed the first literary magazine for deaf people, The Silent World. Unfortunately the magazine only lasted five years. Ballard was the first president of the Gallaudet College Alumni Association.

When Ballard died on December 15, 1912 he left behind his wife—a former student of his—and four children.

Johnson, Gloria R. Contributions of three early Kendall school teachers: James Denison, Melville Ballard and Sarah Harvey Porter. masters thesis. Gallaudet University. Washington, D.C. 1943.

My tuition fee remained the same after the murders so no, I dont think they did. Why would the murders have an effect on tuition fees?

Does students at Gally are allow to subscribe for digital cable, such as HD channels with HD receiver and responsible to pay bills on their own?

Digital cable is means as require receiver to offers more channels than traditional cable tv.

How many cable (RF) socket in room? I means for roommate to share the one room.

My old friend rented a TV cable at NTID dormitory. Some deaf/hearing people also rent the cable in their room. I didn't want one because when they finished their school, they are required to pay the fee for returning their cable box to the company. I believe it was 40 dollars fee. What a dope. I would never to pay the fee. F... off the company.

NTID dormitory provides a free basic cable for each room. I was happy about that. It was a big deal to me.

Watch out the contract paper for the rent cable. It's your problem if you want to rent it. If your dormitory has a free basic cable, then use it. Save your money and be wise. You will need the money after you finished your college and start renting a place to live. Things are very expensive nowadays.

It called video splitters, it's better than argue with roommate over tv shows.

or students can have option to use download section like iTune to watch tv shows on laptop or computer, also at least if they are accept with no CC support but in near future, they will add SDH or subtitles to support this video.

Now, how about can allow to use router to sharing on media and support multi-task, or ethernet switch (or Hub)?

Other question, how dorm looks like based on genders, is that where men and women are mixed at dorm?

1. U mean internet? If so, all dorms got 2 plug internet wall, if u need more than 2 internet like ur cpu/laptop and VP then u have to get router on ur own...

2. All dorms are co-ed dorms, each floors are take turn like men on first floor then women on second floor, men on third floor, women on fourth floor, etc... For Clerc Halll and Carlin Hall, women and men are mixed on any floors cuz they got private bathroom in their suites rooms...

Yup, it's internet, for using multi-task like VP, PC, PS3, Xbox Live, Wii online and Apple TV at same time, that's good move.

That's interesting about co-ed, I found that Ballard West (Krug) is used to be men dorm and Ballard North (Cogswell) is used to be women dorm in long time ago, now, it's changing alot...

Thanks for answer my question.

Carlin Hall got all great accessible for handicapped people, their bathroom pretty big than Clerc Hall's bathroom... For any handicapped people attending Gallaudet are automatically live in Carlin Hall unless they request to live other dorms (make sure that dorms have accessible like elevator, open doors itself, etc)

Fire alarm seems less problem than before, but sometime will pull alarm for some stupid reasons or malfunction (its normal) or overcook like popcorn "bomb" and cause alot smoke... I was working at Benson Hall for a year, I would maybe said 20 or less fire alarms, but spring semester (jan to May 2007) is more less than fall semester cuz of pull alarm then encourage all students to join protest, I think its really stupid to doing this...
