I have few friends who went to Galludent College, they did shave their hair off but they said people would respect if someone don't want to shave the hair off.

my friend who is currently a student at Gallaudet, she used to have longest hair and she shaved her hair last year. I saw her last week and she looks better with short hair.

I am not sure how exactly that tradition began but as far as I can tell you, I used to be a student there and yes, I've shaved my hair off for that event. It's called "Bald Day". Basically it is for the freshmens to compete to try to break the previous classes's record. I can say it was so much fun to do it and daring too! It was worth every moment and the memories too.

I don't know how the hell it started and I think it's a umm... dumb tradition. There was something that was tried as a tradition here at NTID, but it never really continued... bleaching hairs. It was done only a couple times and that was 5 and 6 years ago. Heh!

Shaving or bleaching... what's the point? I don't see how it relates to the beliefs of the colleges or their history.

When I was at Gally during open house in February the guy giving us the tour made it abundantly clear that it was "not a school sponsored event." He must have told the parents 10 times that the school did not support or encourage the event because it's viewed as hazing.

I personally don't plan to shave my head. One of my friends pointed out that I "could be one of, if not the first hearing person to do it," but I really don't care that much. I like my hair.

I ve had friends who gone to Gally and tell the same story. Dunno how that got started but its been going on for years now. Also I heard that there is another tradition at Gally (If Im wrong here, please correct me) that students try to pull fire alarm as many times as possible in a semester/year (?) to beat last year's record. Party time at Gally!!

Someone told me that it has something to do with a lice problem they had years ago. Some students found it to be fun and decided to make it tradition.

Perhaps, it's something that became misunderstood and carried on as a tradition for the wrong reasons... like the Olympics volleyball team who shaved their heads to honor a teammate who was bald. Maybe, someone saw that and decided to follow that too. Then, it became a fad... then a tradition.

It could be anything. Personally, I think it's a dumb tradition... until someone tells me something GOOD that makes SENSE of why it's a tradition.

Doesn't shaving your head have something to do with walking through the coffin door?

No. The legend behind the coffin door was that, years ago, some freshmen walked through it, and not a single one of them graduated. So the story goes that any freshmen who walk through it are doomed to fail.

I did shave my hair when I was freshman year at Gallaudet... Right now, I am SRA (Staff Residential Assistant) for Ballard West, they had few policies for shave hair, if shave hair in residence hall, will get consequence, also if peer pressure (such as someone force u to shave ur hair if u dont wanna) will also get consequence... Impt u will learn more abt Gallaudet and Residence Hall's policies when u come to Gallaudet's NSO...

It makes perfect sense, actually. "Bald Day" is considered by the university to be "hazing," and they try very hard to make it clear that it is not a school-sanctioned event.

Why does Mesa murdered 2 students?

Is it getting more strict?

Joseph Mesa murdered two students in the either Krug or Cogswell dorms (now Ballard North and Ballard West) back in the fall of 2001, I believe, though I may be off on the year. Security has been a bit more strict since then.

Mesa killed them so that he could steal their checkbooks and write bogus checks with them. He got caught the second time when he tried to write with the 2nd dead guy's checkbook.

bald day has nothing to do with cancer as far as I know in the posts.

I think it might have 'military' connections because at most military schools the freshman get their heads shaved bald and are called 'knobs' until they complete their freshman year then they do it to the next incoming class.

I think it is more of a 'rite of passage' than anything else. Sure legally its hazing, but if you willingly participate and are not forced to then its a personal decision to have your head shaved just like you would go to a Barber shop and have it done.
