Wrong title name of Rhode Island School for the Deaf in 1895?
http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/schools6.html
Ugh, we were not mental or physical problem? I am not sure if it was correct title of old Rhode Island School for the Deaf in 1895? They thought that we were mute and dumb as Mental Intitute. Sabrina

In the past Tennessee School for the Deaf was known as Tennessee School for the Deaf and DUMB
That was before the school board came to its senses in the 1920's and took the DUMB off our school's name.

Well, I'm not sure what to say. Sometimes, it means a good thing... sometimes, a bad thing. Since it says Institute by itself, it might sound bad. Perhaps, if they put something before it... it would sound better. They did that for NTID here: National Technical Institute for the Deaf. That makes it sound better instead of people assuming that it's a "mental" institute! Heh!

you guys really shouldn't take offense to the word "institute". Institute doesn't only refer to a mental institute. A college is referred to as an "institute of higher education" at times.
dictionary.com's definitions: To establish, organize, and set in operation. To initiate; begin. To establish or invest in an office or a position. Something instituted, especially an authoritative rule or precedent. A digest of the principles or rudiments of a particular subject, especially a legal abstract. An organization founded to promote a cause: a cancer research institute. An educational institution, especially one for the instruction of technical subjects. The building or buildings housing such an institution. A usually short, intensive workshop or seminar on a specific subject. |

Lot of deaf schools in 1800's are all of very BASIC.. there are no communication or use them slave. I read in deaf history and shock each words. I know one of my grand aunt (not my side, my uncle's side) she went to GA school of the deaf. Her signs are very home, not ASL or SEE nothing... I asked her about her life and told me almost same in deaf hisorty ppl has been slave or communcation
u know..... geez how sad! I have no idea.
