Is RIT ready for its first deaf president?

DeafDigest Blue - May 21, 2006

Barry Strassler, Editor

News of the Week:

Is RIT ready for its first deaf president? Do not laugh. RIT
president Dr. Albert Simone, whose interest in the deaf has
always been strong, has announced his intentions to step down
after the 2006-2007 academic year.
Simone learned signs along with his wife Carolie as a
priority of importance when he started his RIT career.
Additionally Carolie served on the board of directors for a
long time at Rochester School for the Deaf.
RIT already has its first elected deaf president in Liz
Sorkin. NTID is one of the eight schools under the RIT umbrella;
there are over 1,200 deaf and hard of hearing students on the
campus either attending NTID or RIT.
NTID's director is Alan Hurwitz, who is deaf and he is
also the RIT vice president. And before Hurwitz, Robert Davila,
another deaf man, served as NTID's first director.
So, RIT welcoming its first deaf president? Don't bet
against it.
