Going to Gallaudet!
Yes, I realize I'm bragging, and no, I don't care. I deserve to be happy, damnit!
I received an acceptance letter Friday from Gallaudet, stating I've been admitted to their Hearing Undergraduate (HUG) program. Only 2% of each incoming class is hearing, so it's a pretty big deal. I've wanted to go to Gallaudet since before the concept of a HUG program was being discussed, and I'm thrilled that I'm now being given the opportunity! Okay, done bragging now.

Thank you, thank you everyone. I will be entering in the Fall of '06, gnarlydorkette. Me_punctured, I love the images. Especially now, since when I originally viewed the single image it was not moving. The clapping makes it all the more exciting.
Eyeth- I'm actually quite pleased to say I understand the reference to the "Coffin Door." During 5 visits to Gallaudet I didn't hear anything about it, but on my last visit I went on a tour for Open House and they explained the mystery surrounding the door. Sounds a bit silly, but I, for one, will not be passing through.

I learned about the legendary Coffin Door when I first visited Gallaudet as a teenager, spending a whole month on campus. The guide, a middle-aged, overweight bitter man, who introduced us to it claimed that his life fell apart the moment he dared to walk through the door. His story went like this:
"My first semester here at Gallaudet, I had beautiful grades. I had many friends and a beautiful girlfriend. I was thin and my head was still full of hair. I didn't believe in the curse of the Coffin door, so I walked through it and laughed. Then second semester came. My grades dropped to C's and D's. I broke up with my girlfriend. My friends stopped hanging out with me. I gained weight and started going bald. Since then, my life has been downhill. Look at me. I'M TELLING YOU, DO NOT WALK THROUGH THAT COFFIN DOOR!" My classmates and I were doubling over in laughter the whole time, but none of us dared to approach the Coffin Door after we heard the guide talk. |

Leave it up to me to veer topics into interesting and unforeseen directions!
Speaking strictly from an architectural standpoint, is there any relevance to the Coffin Door? Is it purely a cosmetic move? Why have a door of that particular configuration when simple doors would've sufficed? Are there any benefits to having that kind of a door in that kind of a building? Some background information; The Coffin Door is in the Chapel Hall, and further information can be found at this link. |

![]() Thank you for sharing the information with us. I may prescribe to certain superstitions, but the Coffin Door isn't one of them. It's all in our minds, isn't it? |

There isn't actually a set amount of time it takes to become an interpreter. Some people get certified without ever taking an interpreting class, while others take the test and fail several times. Depends on the individual.

I personally will not be involved, despite my friends' wishes. They want me to be the first HUG student to participate, but I like my hair.

Ayala, is it okay if I'm totally jealous? I've been wanting to go to Gallaudet since before I was 10 years old! If I hadn't dropped out of college I probably would have gotten my graduate degree there by now.
Oh well, if my inheritance money comes through, I will probably switch to GIS and finish my degree there. ![]() And once again: congratulations! I'm still jealous! |
