I once used to like math very much .. I majored math in uni.. but many things has changed in my life.. especially in regard to my world of senses.. As my hearing loss getting worse and worse my view on life has changed as well .. thereby I lost my interest in math.. instead, I've moved to another world .. amazing world of half silence.. I'm currently mastering the new world I'm in

I like laughing so much

Since then, the schools have dropped the "old" New Math, and are using different methods (I don't know what it is called now.) What a mess!
I don't know what it's like now. I shudder to think what it would be like now. I graduated HS in the 80s. I also struggled greatly. I scraped by with a C (average) in school, but never really grasped all of the concepts I needed for the higher maths like algebra and such. Oh, and you can forget geometry and trig. In college, I had to take some remedial math courses before I got to college Algebra. I was fortunate enough to have a prof that tought math the "old" way. And, that helped. I learned more in that semester than I learned in ALL of my twelve years in school!

I know! My neice and nephew are starting school now. My nephew is in Kindergarten and my neice is in pre-K. I figure that I'll be able to help them with their homework until they reach 3rd, maybe 4th grade (if I'm lucky!).

I grasp multiplication pretty well, but I falter with division, fractions, decimals, and on and on. I also have the added difficulty of being out of college for 10 or so years. I mentioned in my post to Reba that I had a professor who tought remedial math the "old way", and I learned a lot from her. However, it's been a good 10 years since I was in her class. God help me!

You got a "C"? I bet you did not know that there were some answers in the back of math text book.

Honest, I did not know about the answers in back until freshmen in high school. Thanks a lot to stupid classmates for not showing me earlier

I have a math learning disablity but I do enjoy math now much better than I did in high school and I use a calucator especially when doing the bills.

Ah good old Casio.

I remember the calucator wristwatches.

On a serious note.

I think American schools should be trained in both doing math the old fashioned way then use a graph calcuator etc but give more emphasis to doing math on paper and pen.

I love math. I've had to take a lot of math classes in college in regards to my major which is business finance. I've taken Algebra I and II, 2 different Statistics classes (can't remma the name exactly), Business Statistics, Matrices & Vectors, Caluclus I and II, and Business Caluclus. That's all I can remember for now... I can't remember all of my classes that I took!

I am never good in math...it's always been my worse subject. The highest kind of math class I've taken in school was pre-algebra, I have never taken any advanced than that....and I've been to deaf/HOH program's math classes during my 3 years of H.S., and then in 12th grade, I had to take a math class with hearing kids who wanted to pass that test just to get a diploma....I finally made it and got a standard diploma at my 1988 HS graduation. I passed the English part in 9th grade to get the diploma.
I rely the calculator a lot....it's a big help.

I don't remember the exact cost; I just remember that it seemed very expensive at the time. It was fairly thick (like a deck of cards) and had only basic operations. My younger brother (geek) bought it for me.

Ahem...I was a married mom at the time; you'd have to ask my Hubby about that.

I enjoy working on numbers in math but when it comes to ratio or leading negative in algebra -- I have some struggles in it because I kept forgetting theres leading negative which u have to change. Actually I'm in Interidmate algebra class now. I'm still considering to take more algerbra in the future. I just love working with numbers.

Smile Another math geek

I've had some wonderful teachers over the years. Even with MANY years between HS and college, I still made straight A's in college. It was taking the five classes for the one credit that I really needed (College Algebra) that PO'ed me to no end. I watch the TV show 'Numbers' when I can and enjoy it. Part of my internship was tutoring and student teaching a Deaf Math class.

The chairman of my ITP was talking to students for orientation and mentioned that 15-20 more students could have graduated from the program, but were one class short. LM heard me say "Interpreting 3" and then said it was actually College Algebra that was stopping them. These students had finished all the ITP classes and passed the State Board, but algebra kept them from getting their degrees. Amazing!

You know what's funny? I've been incredibly fortunate to have had interpreters who had Engineering degrees. I'm not quite sure how I would have plucked so much from my Calculus lectures if it wasn't for those interpreters!

Then again, I live in the academic hub of my state, no surprise we've got overeducated people here!

Everyone ....

What's your favorite thing, concept, or equation you've seen in math?

Mine so far is:

cos(x) dx = sin(x) + C

It's beautiful! *Drools*

Or if you like the visual, try Lyapunov fractals:

Uhh.. endymoin.. what the heck is that? Calculus (sp)?

I hate hate hate hate Math.. As far as I can get is 2 + 2 .. oh i know the multiplications and division... I failed Algebra so forget it.. I guess I can say I'm best at English than Math...

Yep, it's calculus. The part with the cos(x) dx and sin(x) + C, that is.

The Lyapunov fractals are not really a part of calculus. They are a LOT of fun to play with though. You make pretty art with fractals. Have you seen the Mandelbrot fractal?

More visual math fun -- Pascal's Triangle!

You can even make hearts with algebra and trigonometry, except this time we use something called polar coordinates instead of the regular x and y ones we use:

r = 2 + 2 cos (theta)

You can somewhat say R is like Y and "theta" is like X.

Hi Endymion,

Are you aware that Albert Einstein did not invent the mathemical formula of the E=mc2

There was an Italian mathemican that figured this out before Einstein ever did.

I am trying to remember the name of the Italian mathemican? Thank you

I don't think I want to see that again.. its too confusing! or you can be my tutor but we'll have to go with the basic math first then go on.. just kidding..

Well, I can say I'm good at English, P.E. and Spelling.. I may be a redneck but doesn't mean I'm not smart. I just dislike Math, it has never been my favorite subject so I always try to avoid Math as much as I can.

P.E. was always my favorite, I was so looking forward for P.E. back in school. I'm just an athletic that likes to do sports. What can I say?
