How to become a ASL interpreter
Hello,
I have always been interested in becoming an interpreter, I am getting my masters in school counseling and would possibly moving southern florida (Ft. Lauderdale) in the next 2 years and would like to start researching a middle school to do my internship that has a high Deaf culture and hopefully become a bi-lingual school counselor. I would be willing to travel, or if anyone knows of parts of Florida that have a high deaf community as well. Thank You Amanda |

![]() Whew! That is one long run-on sentence! Since you're interested in becoming an interpreter, do you already know ASL? What do you mean by "high Deaf culture" and "high deaf community?" Do you mean a high population number of Deaf people? (Not Deaf people who are high. )

um thanks for the grammer lesson.... no i dont mean deaf people that are high, I mean a high volume of deaf population EX: Rochester, NY has a high population of deaf people. I am looking to move to Florida and would like more information on how to become an interpreter ( yes I know some sign language) and would love to find a school that has a need for school counselors that know sign language.
Thanks Amanda |

To become an interpreter, you should attend an ITP (interpreter training program). If you are planning to move in the near future, you should look for colleges that have ITP's in that area. If there aren't any in that area, you can look into distance learning. Most ITP's require you to have a certain level of ASL ability before they will accept you into the program. You will have to check with the specific program as to what their requirements are.
If you intend to be a bilingual counselor, that's not the same as being an interpreter (and vice versa), so the requirements would not be the same. |
