Bales to be charged with murder in Afghan killings
Bales to be charged with murder in Afghan killings - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (AP) — Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder, assault and a string of other offenses in the massacre of Afghan villagers as they slept, a U.S. official said.

The charges signed against Bales include 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of aggravated assault as well as dereliction of duty and other violations of military law, the official said on condition of anonymity because the charges had not been announced.

The 38-year-old soldier and father of two who lives in Lake Tapps, Wash., is charged with going on a shooting rampage in two villages near his Southern Afghanistan military post in the early hours of March 11, gunning down nine Afghan children and eight adults and burning some of the victims' bodies.

The charges are to be read to Bales on Friday. He is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and faces trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The killings were yet another blow to U.S-Afghan relations, following a series of missteps, including the accidental burning of Qurans, which prompted violent protests and revenge killings American troops in the war zone.

The brutal shooting rampage also prompted renewed debate in the United States about health care for the troops, who have experienced record suicide rates and high rates of post-traumatic stress and brain injuries during repeated deployments over a decade of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered a head injury and a foot injury.

Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, has portrayed his client as a patriot, loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times.

"I'm not putting the war on trial," Browne has said, "but the war is on trial." He added: "If I can help create a discussion about the war, that would be a great way for me to go out."

Army officials have said Bales was cleared for return to duty after his head injury.

Bales joined the Army in 2001 after a Florida investment business failed and after he had worked with a string of securities operations. Bales and a broker at one company were hit in 2003 with a $1.5 million arbitration ruling after an elderly couple charged that their holdings were decimated.

I sympathetic to the guy's extended tours(thank George Bush), but this is how he should be charged, he committed murder.

I believe that he was sent back on Obama's watch?!!! He also may have served other tours on Obama's watch?!!!

This is another case that really bothers me. Many people are making judgement calls on this soldier without hearing or knowing all of the facts. I'm not saying he's innocent. But there are circumstances beyond our control at times. Does it excuse his crimes? No way no how. There are probably very few known facts at this point as the investigation is on going. We are not meant to be the judge, jury and executioner in any case. We were not there and many, many facts have not been released and may still yet not be known. Why do we so easily judge a person based on what the news media reports? I am guilty of it myself at times but it is wrong pure and simple. That is why we have the best justice system in the world. No, it is not perfect but no system is. Let it work and give it time. For now lay off this guy. We all have skeletons in our closets.

I have the utmost respect for the military and those who serve, which is why I have no respect for this man.

I have heard worse stories than his from personal friends and relatives. You don't go out and murder people because of bad things that happened to you, You do that because of bad things inside of you.

Yup, I agree with you.

Well now, this gives me pause: I'd heard that this man had been deployed three times before and was suffering(PTSD)....that the military downgraded his PTSD status and sent him out again when he probably should have been kept Stateside and undergone treatment. So, if this is true, isn't the military culpable here?

Saw on news other day, he was conned one senior citizen couple into fraud investment and the couple lost alot of money because of him. It happened in 2000. They were only one who knew him with skeleton in the closet. He was already crook before he joined the army. I have no respect for him even everyone said he served 4 tour. It means nothing to me, others do same and they do not murdered those innocent people. Everyone said what a great man he is but no way not after what he did to those kids. He should be sentence to death. He is not mentally illness from ptsd. I had a cousin who was mentally illness from brain injury, you can tell it right away but this guy did not show any sign of it. It is all crap. No excuse for him and we should take responsible for the death of those innocents in Afghanstan. He should be put to death just alike every other murderers, whether they are soldier or not.

Obama? seriously?

His last tour of duty was during Obama's administration, not Bush's. That is the period in question. He probably shouldn't have been sent back to the war zone if he had PTSD problems.

PTSD can be severely debilitating in some cases. it is kind of sad the military downgraded it, especially with the military's history of shortsighted blunders.

Agree whole-heartedly. And t's truely shameful of the way the Veteran's Administration treats our veterans and their sickness. They "pass them off" with a bunch of pills!...I know first-hand because a friend of mine suffered PST, and he had so many pills, it could fill up a wheel barrow....all different colors!...He did not take them, not one!

He fell aboard a ship while in the Navy, a head injury that was very severe. Also suffered PST...and still does to this day. he suffered flash-backs, depression, disorienteness....multiple of serious injuries that the Navy did not follow up on....just gave him another bottle of pills.......

War can do horrific things to anybody's well-being. I'm not saying this man is not guilty of murder, but then again, anybody that kills so many people, especially children, something is wrong "upstairs in his head".....

Take a look around at all our Veterans!...So many are Homeless...cannot hold down jobs or "live in our world."....

War is horrific!....And the men/women come home with all these memories....and a lot of them lose their minds.....And I'm 100% positive that if the Military put a machine gun in my hands and I had to fight in the war, and gun down people in cold-blood over and over....and when I came "home"...I would never be the same person I was before.....

my point is - Obama didn't command him to Afghanistan. and we can't blame Obama for this.

I'm not blaming Obama for this but we can't blame Bush either. The problem is that we need to get out of there for good and soon. Next we need to treat our soldiers like the incredible people that they are. Give them good benefits and treatment not disregard and so long!
