Nude Photos In Art Gallery Window Shock Local Parents - WPIX

NEW YORK (PIX11)— There is an art exhibit that is certainly turning some heads on the Lower East Side.

It's not the Dino Eli Art Gallery that is the problem, but what is proudly displayed in the front windows to draw people inside.

Last week, folks passing by noticed a slew of half-naked women -- breasts and all.

That freedom of expression wouldn't be a problem, some local residents say, but it's the fact it is displayed directly across the street from an elementary school that has parents fuming.

"That's ridiculous," described Shanea Brooks, who then hastily pulled her daughter away from the building.

PIX11 caught up with the owner, Dino Eli, who wants parents to calm down, saying it's 'not that bad.'

"This is not offensive. This is just naked women which we see in art all the time," said Eli.

He also says this is a perfect opportunity for parents to teach their kids about these kind of images to help them learn about the body.

But, parents say distorted naked women, lying in bathtubs or holding an American flag isn't the kind of picture they want to show their son or daughter to teach them anything.

"I would never want my child to see this. Imagine my daughter coming by and trying to figure this picture out. She'd be like, 'Mommy why is that lady's chest hanging out?', " said Brooks.

This isn't the first time that the gallery has gotten into some hot water -- just last year, Eli had the same kind of problem after putting up pictures of pornography in the window to garner attention.

He says this isn't the kind of publicity he wanted.

Eli also says that he puts the front gate down to hide the images in the afternoon when the school dismisses the children and then pulls it back up when they all go home.

OMG (oh my god) please dont look nude at art gallery when you taking kids to art gallery

I love art. Go to the galleries and museums regularly, Houston is privilege to have some outstanding art displays. I lean mostly toward Surrealism. Yes, there are many nudes and almost always professionally and tastefully done. But to display them across the street from an elementary school is, IMO, is insane. Would anyone allow a S.O.B. or strip club across the street? Afterall, it is about freedom of expression and speech. But there has to be guidelines to follow and putting on a display across the street, where this would be seen each school day, is ridiculous.

oh it's at lower east side? only 5 minutes away. hmmmm I better go check it out!

nudity and art really depends but from what I seen in the video, that doesn't exactly look like something considered "art" to me. When I saw the pics from the video...I thought at first the nudity art work are from the paintings or statues or whatever but photographs of real people is a different story. I'm an artist myself and I've even drew live models from the classroom but the photos from the video is nothing compared to the nude models I've drew. The photos looked alittle more pornographic than art.

I don't find anything wrong with nudity. in my opinion, nudity is inappropriate for the front window disply. especially across from a school. :ugh:

Highly inappropriate anywhere in public view! This guy likes the attention and it;s obviously why he does it. Fine him big time and I'll bet it doesn't happen again. Personal freedoms cannot stomp on the rights of individuals or society.

I went and saw nothing :dunno:

Like I said, art and nudity depends. We do not mind nudity if it doesn't include photos of real life people laying in bathrooms or standing outside and revealing them at the front door to the public where children can obviously see them and may ask embarrassing questions. This kind of "art nudity" you seen is nothing compared to other art nudity that were done by famous artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Paul Gohan.

I thought I read "until the end of the week". Maybe the pressure got to the owner.....

Seriously, kids have seen worser things....on TV...even their parents taking a shower, or having sex.....it happens!

That's why I always knock on my son's doors if they are closed...and wait for them to open it, as I'm not sure if they are undressing or whatever....As for myself (and being deaf)...I keep my door closed, and they just have to wait until I come out. I also locked the door when they were under the ages of 8, as they at times were forgetful.....:giggle: &

As for the nudie art gallery across the street, that's taboo since it's so close to a school.

my son and i were at the local pool. some russians from ny were tourists renting a house up here. that russian family stripped poolside to change into swim suits. we are not talking hot russian mail order bride, more like a wrinkled hippo she beast with the face of a warthog thing. anyway they get naked and my son who was 10 at the time saw that as his his first naked woman. well it got worse when she bent over to reveal what looked like a skunk that became roadkill for privates. my poor son, hell it even gave me nightmares... :barf: he eventually recovered and therapy was not needed.

nudity, there is a time and place for it.
