JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The face of gun ownership is changing. In fact, it's getting a lot prettier. More women than ever are picking up rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Some may picture Angelina Jolie as her character in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," or in "Tomb Raider," or in, really any of her movies, but many gun experts say the average female gun owner is not necessarily a femme fatale.

There are between 15 and 20 million ladies packing heat these days and target shooting is one of the fastest-growing female sports.

Whether she uses it or not, Lauren Widner, a 26-year-old physician's assistant said carrying a gun is empowering and releases stress.

Gun expert and shooting instructor Bill Martin said ladies like Widner are in all of his classes. He said they come from all over and are mainly coming in for self-defense reasons.

Martin teaches basic shooting classes and the course needed to get a concealed weapons permit. He said demand from women has been so great since 2008, he's had to create all-female classes.

The firearm industry has also caught on, creating pink pistols and purse holsters.

I am a nervous enough person, that I would never resort to carrying a gun.

Understandable, Kristina. As for my case, I'm single and the crime rate here in Jax is pretty bad....I don't like guns, either, really. Just wish the world could get along and there was no crime at all! But, that's wishful thinking these days....

We have cans of mace by the door and billy clubs provided by the local resident Sheriff's officers.

Glad to hear that more women are packin'! I just hope they know how to use it and aren't afraid to if need be!

I don' t like guns myself, but I'm glad that young woman in Oklahoma was armed and knew how to use it. She and her baby are alive today because of it, and the guy who broke in carrying a big knife is gone. Can' t feel too sorry about that outcome.

Unfortunately, that would bore most humans, and by "most humans," I mean men, mostly. Men manufacture, use, and own the vast majority of all guns and weapons in the world.

I don't expect this trend to continue. The statistics are probably manufactured and manipulated to encourage more women to buy guns: something that isn't going to happen. The fact is, women have a very different idea about what guns symbolize, no matter if they support gun ownership or not.

Some hearing friends took me to the Gun Shooting Range for my birthday once. I'm a lousy shot from a long distance, but much better closer up. If per chance my life or my family lives were in danger, I would not hesitate to shoot. It's survival instinct.

We do not open the doors unless we know who is beyond it...we keep our doors locked all the time also (mandatory in my home). I'm also very cautious whenever some of my boys' friends drop by, and if my boys are not home. I do not let them in.....not to be parnoid here...but I'd rather be on the safe side. A single woman alone is very easy prey, and you never know who you can really trust these days.

I have some friends that live alone (2 ladies). They have rigged up something with their doorbell. It still rings like a doorbell, but it also turns on a recording of 2-3 dogs ferociously barking. They turn off that recording after saying "Down Boy!", then use a security window on their door to see out. Kind of like the little peep door at the Wizard's place in the Emerald City in Wizard of Oz.

More women are being scared by the FUD the profiteers are spreading. I think it's bloody annoying they aren't being held accountable for the damages they indirectly create through such FUD.

I've heard that women are better shooters than men are so...yea that somehow makes it even more interesting that more women are packing heat now lol.
