911 Tells Mom 'Do What You Have To Do': Okla. Mom Sarah McKinley Kills Intruder Justin Martin

A teenage mother shot and killed an intruder after a 911 operator said she was allowed to defend her infant son and herself with force.

Sarah McKinley, 18, killed Justin Martin with a single gunshot wound on New Year's Eve when he forced his way into her Blanchard, Okla. home and came at her with a long hunting knife, ABC News reports.

The deadly encounter occurred about a week after the young mom's husband died of cancer, according to TV station KOCO. Martin darkened McKinley's door on the day of her husband's funeral, several days before the shooting. He claimed he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello, but she didn't open the door.

Martin returned with an accomplice on Dec. 31, and they tried to force their way into the modest house. When McKinley heard the men trying to break in, she called 911.

She also holed up in her bedroom with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, while she put a bottle in her three-month-old son's mouth.

"I've got two guns in my hand -- Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" McKinley asked the 911 operator.

"I can't tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told McKinley when she asked a second time. The call went on for 21 minutes as the men powered their way into McKinley's house.

Eventually, Martin kicked in the door and charged at her with a knife, but McKinley fired before he could injure her.

Police found Martin slumped over a couch that McKinley had used to barricade the door and pronounced him dead on the scene, TV station News 9 reports. They said McKinley's use of force was justified.

Martin's alleged accomplice, Dustin Stewart, fled when he heard the gunshot and later surrendered to police, according to The Oklahoman. Stewart was charged with burglary.

She did what she had to do.

This is one thing the UK needs, I remember a story when a man whose family was tied up and threated at knife point was jailed when he chased them and beat them with a bat. Where's the justice in that? We need the right to defend our homes from trespassers with whatever force necessary...

She lives about 20 minutes from me. Poor kid - in one week, her husband died of cancer on Christmas day, most of her German Shepherds were poisoned and killed (she bred them and that's how she made her money), and then the day of her husband's funeral, these two horrible excuses for human beings broke into her house while they KNEW she was home alone with a baby, because they wanted to steal her husband's vicodin. The guy that got shot was holding a foot long knife too so who knows what they planned to do to her. She lives in a rural area so no neighbors were close enough to hear what was going and go help her, and they knew this. Also, police think these two guys may have been the ones to poison her dogs so that they would be out of the way when they planned to break in. Sick, sick, sick.

Justice served! Sad for her but good on her! Someone taught her how to care for herself and it paid off!

I am glad she was ok. Sometimes it's unbelievable the lengths human beings will sink to.

How frightening it must have been for her. Poor lady!

I can imagine the trauma the mother went through. As if she did not have enough on her plate. World is a crazy place.

Let's hold off for a little bit. Stay on this story and see what happens to Dustin Stewart. If that guy gets probation, there is no justice. Only 15 to 20 would satisfy me.

A brave young woman. This is why my husband makes sure our daughters know how to fire a gun and hit a target. We also live in a rural area where it would take a long time for police to arrive.

Wirelessly posted

Definitely justified. Don't ever mess with a mother who has a baby...

Ugh, I hate those comments in the original article. They complained that she shouldn't shot him. I am so glad that she was able to defend herself and her son against him!
