Why is it notable? We have had it in Iowa for some time. What state is Conan OBrien in?

He is in New York City this week.

It is noteworthy because it is the first same sex wedding ever televised, and because, unfortunately, the vast majority of states are not as progressive and civilized as yours.

Yeah, me, too. Not a big fan of Conan's, but I'm going to catch this. Wonder how the ratings will play out for this one episode? I'd say they will skyrocket!

Lovely ceremony, and a beautiful expression of love and devotion. Mozel Tov, and a long and happy life together, Scott and David.

No, he has the credentials. It was a legal wedding. The couple is officially married.

lol you don't really call it "credential." Just about anybody can do it.... along with typically $15 registration fee to officiate wedding as ordained minister

In Conan's case.... he was ordained by Universal Life Church.... free registration (Universal Life Church).

I found something interesting under New York law....

Quote:
(2) In cases where the denomination does not have such a directory, the registrant must show several pieces of documentary proof of authority. First, the registrant must present an ordination certificate accompanied, if necessary, by an English translation thereof. Ordination certificates issued by the Universal Life Church or its affiliates are not acceptable as evidence of clerical authority based on Ranieri v. Ranieri, New York Law Journal, March 27, 1989. Ravenal v. Ravenal, 72 Misc.2d 100, 338 N.Y.S.2d 324 (Sup.Ct.N.Y.County 1972). In lieu of an ordination certificate, the registrant must present a "license to minister" or a letter of appointment from his or her religious body, i.e. from its hierarch or its board of trustees. Second, the registrant must present a letter from his or her local congregation verifying that he or she is the pastor or associate pastor of that congregation, and that the congregation therefore consents to the registering of that individual. Lastly, if the church is incorporated, the registrant must present a copy of the articles of incorporation. If the church is not incorporated, the registrant must submit a statement as to the location of the house of worship, the reason for its founding, the number of trustees, the approximate size of its congregation, and how often it meets.
and I think NY state recently passed the law to recognize ULC

perhaps I should sign up as ordained minister and wed my gay friends

Your point? He is an ordained minister. Therefore, he can legally perform weddings. So, he legally peformed a legal wedding and the couple is legally wed.

The question was: Does Conan have the power to offficiate the wedding or is it a mock wedding?

He has to have credentials as a judge, a magistrate, a justice of the peace, or a minister. He has the credentials to show that he is an ordained minister, so therefore, he has the power to perform a legal wedding.

Since he was endowed with the power by the State of New York to perform a legal wedding ceremony, then obviously, the law has been changed.
U mad?

Looks like someone is missing the point of the thread. Same sex marriqge is going mainstream, and that, my friends, is a wonderful step forward.Millions of people witnessed the even via live television, and this is a celebration of our move forward to give the rights to homosexual couples to celebrate their love and devotion in the same way that heterosexual couples do. Please do not get hung up on insignificiant little things like where the man officiating the ceremony was ordained. It is meaningless. All that matters is that he was credentialed as necessary to perform a legal wedding ceremony, he did so for a same sex couple, and millions celebrated.

whoa umad? your Friday plan got unexpectedly cancelled or something?

in case you didn't know, I supported it and it's wonderful. I simply showed more background details on Conan's power to officiate the wedding because I was curious to see how he did it and I'm sure everybody's curious too. and I even stated that I should apply for it to wed my gay friends.

Jiro and Jillio, can you two give it a rest? Your bickering is carrying over into multiple threads and it's quite frankly getting tiresome.

Glad i missed it. If I had to deal with this in my own house - I'd be telling them to take it outside.

Once, during that famous Ice Storm - a couple who lost power stayed with me in my tiny apartment along with me and my two young sons who were about 2 and 5 at the time. Their bickering got so bad and unbearable and I was very upset for their lack of regard of young ears in the house that i kicked them out.

they went home and had no choice but to snuggle together for warmth. They kissed and made up heh.

You should have said that to start with and dropped it instead of trying to derail the intent of the thread by making innane remarks regarding the nature of the ordainment in this situation.

Backpedaling ineffective. You were quite obviously making fun of and trying to cast light on something important and historical in order to minimize it.

Next time, try to show support instead of making fun, and your posts will be better received.
