rice paper actually fares much better than duct tape in X-form.

the stores must be salivating over easy profits - selling batteries that were kept back in storage room for several months, chinese-made flashlights, crappy duct tapes, etc.

I doubt that. The threat was real.

Just saw more pics from Nags Head. The "skin" is peeling off a roof, and several homes have lost some siding.

A pier has been lost in Emerald Isle, NC, and another one badly damaged further north.

Not what you'd call a "lot" of damage, but not nothing, either.

3 deaths so far (the man I mentioned killed by a tree branch was not KDH, but another city), and some beach houses about to fall into the ocean.

What happened in Joplin was real, too, yet there were scammers caught and the city practically forbade repair crews entry because of boosted costs.

Nah the repair crews in the northeast are union.... They are not happy about this. I don't think many crews would travel north of North Carolina.

As for scammers I did see obama trying to turn this into politics already with a few passive aggressive comments during his meeting with FEMA. Really sad.

I have union and none union friends working right now in Joplin and the only way they can work there is to do it cheaply.
And yeah, let's turn this into an Obama bashing thread, why the hell not?

what I am saying is with the Northeast being mostly union it is hard for people to travel in and do work. That is the reason most crews don't travel there. There will probably be scams but mostly from local folks unlike Katrina and Rita where anybody with a truck was there with a sign whether they had experience or not.

Not specifically bashing obama..... Anybody who tries to play politics with the storm before it even hits is slime in my book.

I agree that all politicians are sleazebags. Except Ron Paul.

The aftermath.. People look to take advantage of the people. Yes, you are right. And only donate to legit charities.

That is why people need to check for contracting licenses and not to pay in advance.

I though you meant before the storm.. but the aftermath the scammers are crawling around.

Some shingles torn off houses in our beach-house neighborhood, per some pics posted on the neighborhood Facebook page. And now the winds are picking up again for a second go-round.

Let's consider this old joke: Don't tell my mother that I'm a politician. She thinks I'm a piano player in a brothel.

Got it. It might be time to invest in some storm shutters or upgrade the windows. It is very expensive though.

It always makes me nervous to be in that condo whenever we have very heavy rain with strong wind. You can really feel the pounding and strength of wind. So strong that it howls.
Yeah, I don't like the wind either.

During Hugo, we huddled in our interior hallway with blankets, no windows. We could see and feel the inside walls heaving in and out, like the house was deep breathing. Scary!

If the power goes on, your lights will, too, unless you have a separate generator.

But you should be fine anyway. Everyone will be in the same situation.

The hurricanes last longer than they used to. In the past, the hurricanes typically lasted about an hour or two. Now, the hurricanes last what seems like forever. Anyone else notice this? Or am I just remembering incorrectly?

People used to put masking tape (not duct tape) in X's on the window glass. It's an old wives' tale that it benefits windows. It just makes a terrible mess to clean off, especially after the sun hits it.

I remember that Hugo (1989) was about six hours over our house, during the night.

I hope that everyone gets to where they need to be quickly.
It's a good idea to check in with neighbors. Know who is still nearby in case you need to help each other. Damage is random and you may need a place or some help.
