Very interesting conclusion:

"Sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in the United States is a "historical problem" that has largely been resolved and that never had any significant correlation with either celibacy or homosexuality, according to an independent report commissioned by Catholic bishops — and subjected to fierce attack even before its release on Wednesday.

The report blamed the sexual revolution for a rise in sexual abuse by priests, saying that Catholic clerics were swept up by a tide of "deviant" behavior that became more socially acceptable in the 1960s and '70s."

"It also found no evidence that homosexuality was to blame. While more boys than girls have been abused, the report said, that is probably because priests had greater access to boys. In fact, it said, the incidence of sexual abuse in the priesthood began declining not long after a noticeable rise in the number of gay men entering Catholic seminaries in the 1970s."

Of course, rabid homophobes couldn't accept that homosexuality has nothing to do with sexual abuse:

"A conservative Catholic group objected to the report's exoneration of homosexuality as a cause of the abuse.

William Donohue, the outspoken president of the conservative Catholic League, noted on the group's website that the report found that 81% of abuse victims were male and 78% were beyond puberty. "Since 100% of the abusers were male, that's called homosexuality, not pedophilia or heterosexuality," he said."

Please READ The report which is pretty interesting because we have readership bias but it showed statistics that show something entirely different. Sexual abuse dropped dramatically for a while. Most of the shocking news about the Catholic abuse happened in the 1970's and late 80's:

Since when was raping 10 year old boys part of the sexual revolution of the 70's? I certainly am glad to have missed that memo.

Please read the report. It is NOT unique to the Catholic Church - it was happening in ALL churches. The biggest difference is that it maintains a databse of all accusations and allegations while Baptists and nondemoniational churches don't and even refuse to set up.

Not saying it is unique. I am saying it is disgusting and seeing them making excuses for this behaviour angers me.

But the sexual abuse complaints dropped dramatically in the past 10 years. How do you explain such a dramatic drop?

Not sure what caused sexual abuse in churches but what is it then if not for society? It can't be "homosexuality" because it said it dropped after admitting homosexuals.

Are you denying that there's a societal influence on their behavior?

Maybe once the problem came out, boys stopped being put in the situation where they could easily become a victim.

I am refusing to accept any blame for this criminal act. Since I am part of society, that reflects on me, you, everyone. Should any of us accept blame?

What a load of crap! The abuse been going on way before the 70's! I read the that nuns where sexuality abusing deaf kids too .

This is also happening in the public school systems too. It is not all inclusive to Catholics, or even ... religion.

A drop in complaints does not always mean a drop in activity.

To me, a drop in complaints means that abusers have found new means of keeping their victims quiet longer. The main reason why abuse runs rampant despite victims coming forward is because institutions, religious or non-religious tend sweep it under the rug and the abuser is moved to another position within the institution or is forced to resign without reason.

It's not just the Catholic church with this problem, it's all churches and it's sad because the victims often see their abusers as a person of authority in their lives whether is it a Bishop, Priest, Minister, or other member of the clergy. All religious denominations have been rocked by scandal, only the Catholic church seems to be the only one willing to talk openly about it and tell everyone of how they are 'resolving' the problem. The SBC was rocked by sexual abuse when up to eleven deacons from the same church were aware of a minister abusing youth members and did nothing to stop it or to report it. The SBC will admit it happened, but they will not discuss it at all and they prefer that it's never even mentioned.

The church has some competition from the human traffickers. I understand that it's very lucrative and easier to find predators because of the internet.

I wonder if some of the attempted child abductions are human traffickers. I scared a man away from the front of our local elementary school. I just kept staring at him. Finally, he walked to his car, looked directly at me, and I mouthed the words "I'm watching you." He got into his car and drove away. I reported all of this to the principal but she seemed more interested in protecting herself by not disclosing the incident to parents.

As a Seminarian (currently on medical leave), the idea of "blaming society" is yet another attempt to "pass the buck" rather than accept that the Church is the blame (through inaction), at least in part for the horrific acts which have occurred at that hands of clergy in all denominations (though more commonly in the RCC).

The REAL reason that there have been declines in reports is because the processes for screening seminarians from the point they feel called to pursue ordination, to the point they are finally ordained, and then continually while they are serving in a church/parish etc as clergy have advanced significantly - thus preventing a lot of "potential abusers" from ever being ordained in the first place (or being pulled the moment they exhibit specific traits etc).

Further - the lay members of churches are better aware of how to notice signs of 'trouble' much earlier, and the lay leaders/elders within the church have been urged by clergy - including their bishops, that priests ARE human ... they aren't perfect by any stretch and as such they should not be listened to and obeyed "blindly". Parishioners have explicitly been told by their bishops (etc.) that Priests/Pastors should be even MORE careful regarding making sure that "potentially questionable" situations do not occur (ie clergy should never use their JOB POSITION to lead anyone - adults or children to do anything that could be construed as sexual, or abusive in nature)

Many Seminaries require child abuse registry and criminal registry checks on any applicants, and most/all require multiple careful psychological screenings etc at critical points in the seminarians education and call process.

While these steps make the process of ordination much longer and more demanding in the past ... it also helps protect future parishioners from being abused.

Until each church on a denominational and diocesans and parish levels -takes responsibility for continually screening their clergy for mental health and propriety, as well as empowering all laity to ensure a safe environment for their children and adults - until this happens universally, abuse WILL still happen ... and instead of worrying about "who's fault it is" the church (and all people) need to focus on preventing situations in which these types of atrocities can occur.

FWIW - I'm Anglican, and have attended a church in which the priest was found to be sexually abusing children (I was a child when this happened, and wasn't directly harmed - though I was impacted indirectly on an emotional "if you can't trust your priest...wow!" level). I also know of Lutheran churches, and RCC in which abuse has occurred ... in all these situations Screening (of the clergy) and EDUCATION where the most powerful tools (educating the laity, and especially the children in a "real, but not frightening" manner)

It won't stop - until we stop pointing fingers and work together to protect each other.

It is now to be accepted that you are NOT a pedophile if the child you molest is over 10 yrs old. Just a homosexual. Now this sounds to me like a way of somehow using the socially acceptable "term" homosexual to excuse what is clearly an act of a pedophile. This is sickening..first they try to pay ppl off for their silence and when that no longer worked and the money was running out they got themselves an agent.
Can't you hear it now..".the boy said he was 12"...OMG ! sickening..Midnight♥

In my childhood when I go to confessions, I cannot lipread through the screen separating the stalls in the confessional booth. We remedied that by having the priest and I go into a private room where I gave my confessions. I have never been abused. :hmm:

Not only is this unacceptable in our society, it' a crime.

Could you direct me to where I can find the information regarding the 10 year old age limit?

I can't believe you'd say this.

Same here at the deaf school...using a private room, I and several of my schoolmates were abused and raped by priest. And this is a catholic school for the deaf. We were all to young to understand what was happening and I and the others thought, "If the priest and nuns are ok with it, it must be ok." This continued for years after I graduated (8 grade) and until the school was sued.
