Teen Murder Suspect Fixated on Death

MIAMI (AP) - A 14-year-old charged with killing a classmate in a school restroom kept a personal journal that fixated on violence and scrawled the words ``will become a serial killer'' at the bottom of a printout on mass murderers, documents released Friday show.

Forty-one pages of Michael Hernandez's personal jottings and doodles were released by the state attorney's office following a public records request.

Hernandez was indicted as an adult on a first-degree murder charge in the slashing death of friend and fellow eighth-grader Jaime Rodrigo Gough on Feb. 3.

The victim, described as a good student who liked baseball and played the violin and flute, was found bleeding to death Feb. 3 in a boys' restroom at Southwood Middle School in affluent, suburban Palmetto Bay. His throat had been slashed.

Defense attorney Richard Rosenbaum said the writings did not look like the work of an ordered mind, but he said he had no comment on the evidence itself.

He also would not say if he would pursue an insanity defense or make Hernandez's mental competency an issue. But Rosenbaum said he is awaiting reports from a team of doctors.

Ed Griffith, spokesman for prosecutors, said, ``It would be inappropriate for us to comment in regards to an ongoing case.''

The note ``will become a serial killer'' was on a six-page copy of an Internet article on criminal profiling titled ``Mass murderers, spree killers and serial murderers.''

Drawings in the margins include a hangman.

Hernandez also wrote a list of violent movies and video games; kept instructions for making a bomb, detonator and Molotov cocktails; and wrote ``White Power'' under a swastika, the documents indicate.

``You will be a serial killer and mass murderer, stay alone, never forget God ever, have a cult and plan a mass kidnapping for new world ... be an expert thief etc.,'' the notes say.

Hernandez also listed mundane daily tasks including bodybuilding routines, work on computers, homework and Bible reading.

Florida's broad public records law allows for the release of most law enforcement documents after they are given to defense attorneys.

Things like this make me highly afraid of the people my own kids are going to come across, someday. You don't want to know what could happen if they piss off the wrong person.

I remember the day that the shooting at Columbine happened...I was at a friend's house...and OMG. I said to myself, "WHY didn't the kid's parents see this coming???" And you know, the fact that their own parents, who are supposed to know this kid better than anyone else in the world, didn't see this coming...how could anyone else have?

Just how are we supposed to protect our kids???

Sadly, I believe these kids learn this behavior by crimes committed by other teenagers - it isn't, but they might be led to believe that it's cool or it's a "power trip" of some sort. I'll never understand it. People will never get over this sort of thing.
