Can scientists make a space elevator? - CNN.com

Yeah, why not? What are stopping them from doing it? I would love to go up in a space elevator to look at horizontal edge of Earth and up to millions and millions of stars in the dark, cold space.

nah. not economically feasible. if it's connected to mining spacefield, sure why not?

lol that would obviously take years to build this...another of those future space colonies plans.

Maybe........

Gosh. what if the elevator bends. ouchie!

it is supposed to bend to some degree however it's not a problem because the speed is nearly constant. both will rotate at same speed, same path so bending is not a problem. the biggest worrisome issue is the stray space junk or small meteoroid that can strike it at anytime.

it is common for a space shuttle to return back to Earth with dozens of damage caused by space junks.

yeah then i mean "space junks". that is scary. i think it is toooo far way there and fix it all the way from head to toe. It costs toooo much.

yup. the only way this space elevator project is feasible is if there is mining prospect out there. The mining companies will seize that opportunity fast and build it! Look at how long it took government to build the space shuttle.... and then look at how long it took companies to build it for space tourism.

you gotta love capitalism! but.... too bad our planet does not have any floating asteroids/meteoroid nearby to mine since those are rich in iron and something else.

Absolutely.

The 95 percent of space objects orbiting Earth are junks.

Check my thread that I just created: http://www.alldeaf.com/current-events/71604-space-junks.html

What about space tourism? education? research?

Anything is possible! :D

space tourism - how many can afford it? I wouldn't be surprised if there is only 1-2 space tourism businesses. maybe only 2 people in this AD can afford it. I wouldn't be surprised either if it bankrupted after a few years. Skydiving has been around for a very long time and it's far cheaper and safer than this space flight. How many of you and rest of Americans have done it? Same thing.

education and research? Look at how long it took ISS to finish... and it's not even finished yet. way too slow. way too expensive. typical government program.

Space Mining? the most feasible and highly motivated program. Can be done quickly and lucratively. Capitalism at its best!

I'm not being pessimistic... just realistic.

How? forget the war to spend on, and change it to spend $ on the space. ;)

still costs much more than 2 wars combined even if wars continued for another 8 years. worse of all - there's a very high likelihood that the structure will collapse during the construction :aw:

this is probably the most dangerous construction project ever in the history. construction man at stratosphere zone.... imagine!
