Video games: An electronic pain killer

WHEELING, W.Va. (Wireless Flash) -- Kids can rejoice over this news: A new study suggests video games may be a good cure for some of the things that ail you.
Psychology researchers at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, have found that video games are a good distraction from chronic pain.

In the study, subjects were asked to take up the joystick for a few rounds while experiencing pain -- and reported lower pain ratings as well as higher tolerance of pain.

You don't have to be a gamer in order for the technique to work. Researcher Bryan Raudenbush says the positive effect of the games was seen regardless of the person's previous video game experience, level of competitiveness or aggressiveness.

He sums it up by saying, "This study found that playing video games significantly distracts people from painful stimulation. This could be a great adjunct to pain management in children."

LOL!

I'll have to relate to this article. Playing video games do help distract me from many things, but I never actually thought of it that way!

I'm a smoker... yeah, yea, I know - it's a bad habit (hacks and coughs!) Anyway, whenever I'm out of cigs and I'm pacing around for a nicotine fix, playing my PS2 helps tremendously in ignoring my cravings... for a temporary time, like for a few hours.

Believe me, wanting a cig and not having one is "painful!" That's why it's a hard habit to quit...

Still, the day is beautiful and lots of better things to do out there than playing video games all day and night that would make ur stomach bigger and bigger. (no offense)

True. It's REALLY nice to go outside. It's seriously true. I love spring and summer.

Yeah that's right, just because it helped you to stop thinking about the pain. If you think about the pain, it will hurt more and if you don't think, it won't hurt.
