I-5 repairs kick off early repair season | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News
SEATTLE – The 2009 highway construction season will kick off two months early to pack in dozens of major road repair projects, officials said, starting Monday with partial closures of Interstate 5 on nights and weekends.
As the season continues, motorists will see major closures on I-5 in Seattle and Tacoma, I-405, SR 520 in Redmond and on I-90 across Lake Washington between February and October.
"The next two construction seasons will be among the largest that the department has ever delivered," said Paula Hammond, Transportation Secretary.
"While we expect a big impact for drivers this summer, these projects represent critical maintenance work and system improvements. We have worked hard to coordinate our work zones with cities and counties."
The work will begin Monday on I-5 with a pavement rehabilitation project through downtown and North Seattle.
I-5’s 40-year-old concrete pavement has ruts and, in many locations, is cracking. The $21 million project will replace 450 cracked concrete panels and grind and smooth 18 miles of rough road between South Seattle and the King-Snohomish county line.
"Drivers complain about the rough ride and we don’t blame them," said Lorena Eng, regional administrator of the state Department of Transportation. "Fortunately, this work represents the start of a long-term effort to rehabilitate I-5, a main component of Washington’s economic engine."
Most lane closures will take place at night and on the weekends to avoid the peak morning, daytime and evening commute.
The coming week's I-5 pavement repair schedule looks like this:
Monday, Feb. 9 - the morning of Friday, Feb. 13
• Crews will reduce traffic to one lane on northbound I-5 from Albro Place to just south of the West Seattle Freeway nightly for pavement repair. Lane closures will be staggered: three lanes will be open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; two lanes will be open from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and one lane will be open from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.
Wed., Feb. 11 - Friday, Feb. 13
• Crews will reduce traffic to two lanes on southbound I-5 from Stewart Street to Dearborn Street; one lane on southbound I-5 from Dearborn Street to I-90 for pavement repair. Nightly lane closures begin at 8 p.m. and last until 5 a.m.
• The I-90 collector-distributor lane (the lane that runs parrallel to mainline I-5) is open to southbound I-5 traffic going to I-90, and traffic continuing south on I-5.
Wed., Feb. 11 - Friday, Feb. 13
• The Howell Street on-ramp to southbound I-5 will be closed to all traffic from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m nightly. Cars will be detoured to the James Street on-ramp; trucks will be detoured to the Mercer Street on-ramp.
• The southbound I-5 Union Street off-ramp will be closed to all traffic nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Cars and trucks will be detoured to the James Street off-ramp.
