Seems like so many tragedies are happening these days - what is really going on?

It indeed is a terrible tragedy.

One factor is the world population is continually growing, and more people in less space tends to magnify natural and man-made disasters. Another factor is surely that nearly instant world-wide news intensifies scattered disasters and brings them home to us in what seems like greater numbers.

I hope the upside to rapid news will be rapid help for surviving victims.

7.8 is definitely major! It is sad and hope more people will be rescued than found dead.

Yes, that is one big tragedy, and we have heard a lot of natural disasters such as tornadoes in the South. Hopefully the death toll won't be so high.

Asia earthquakes are more common out there.

So sad.

Wonder how come China does not update their building code? It seems China always has worst diasters than rest of world. So far their earthquakes had killed more than 1 million people in China since 1500's while here in USA, earthquake only killed handful of people. I dont get it.

Because it's over 1 billion people in China, and they hope to kill more people in unsafe area. It just my mind pop up and want to say.

Because the Chinese are only slightly better than the North Koreans when it comes to government and caring for their own citizens.

I wonder if the Chinese govt will help the victims. They shouldn't have built such substandard buildings in the first place, though.

I wonder if all the tragedies that has been happening is related to global warming?

Whatever the cause, it's a good way to get us down about the prospect of the future for our family and future ancestors.

Right now, there is plenty accusation on Chinese government.

Earthquake is one of death natural that done in century, it has nothing with global warming as landing move anywhere for many year. Raise or loss mountain.

That is terrible and sad. I do hope the Chinese government will improve rest of the country buildings codes to withstand in earthquakes and also to help out the victims of quakes.

boy, it's sad! but.....

i'm going to say something first time here on this topic. well, it remind me of people who made fun of chinese people with SARS back in 2003. my mom and i witnessed two american woman complained about chinese person who sit behind them and they were angry because they thought that a chinese person is infected by SARS virus, which is not true. i will never forget how rude those two american woman on a plane for NYC. it was also bad experience because i've seen people ignored and refused to talk to asian people and how they treat them because of SARS. also at theater movie, people refused to sit near any asian people because of SARS even on a bus too. people were digusted by the looks on asians.

they still are predjuiced against any asians even pacific islander here in america.

i learned that they called them "chink", "gook" and "japs" and they made fun of eyes too. i wish i wouldn't see that but it's already front of me and also made a negative comment toward asians. it is same things for hearing people who made fun of deaf too because deaf can't hear. that i will never forget what happened.

my sister's friend who went to thailand and she will never forget what she saw in thailand when tsunami hits in 2005 after christmas. it's unbelievable.

2 things - the people choose to live in high-hazard area. and substandard buildings? do you realize that they are poor people? what do you expect? build an expensive condo in poor community?

Earthquake is independent of global warming variable. Chinese are infamous for their aggressive terraforming methods. They built livable land on high-hazard areas. Overcrowding in an area is the biggest factor for high causalities.
