The toddler is very lucky. He could have been dead since he was underwater for nearly 15 minutes. The article did not exactly say if the toddler was strapped in his stroller or he just sat in the stroller when the high wind knocked him over into the lake.

Since the child had been underwater for nearly 15 minutes, chances are very good that he is brain dead. He was already unconscious when he was pulled from the water. The child's parents are probably going to have to make a very difficult decision.

You're right, There's all the possibilities in this situation. However, the child is still in critical condition and he will be heavily monitored during his stay at the hospital. All I can say is, I hope the child will be able to pull through this.

It doesn't look good, really.

well he has these facts for his benefit:
1. he is very young and they tend to bounce back fast,
2. it was extremely cold water which helps to keep you from totally dying, if he was cold in the water he has better chances since it slows the heart and whole body down, like going into a type of hibernation mode. yes it is only a small amount of time but the colder the body temp at time of last breath the better chances of full recovery.

Poor little baby! I have a tot and it just gave me goosebumps! I hope he survives but 15 mins underwater..chances arent good.

That's true. The colder water temps are on his side.

The boy was listed Friday in critical condition at Children's Memorial Hospital, where he was taken after a dramatic rescue by members of the Chicago Fire Department's dive team.

Divers found the boy, still strapped in his stroller, about 10 feet beneath the water's edge. A strong wind gust apparently propelled the stroller into Belmont Harbor, where water temperatures were 42 degrees, shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The child's grandfather, who was sitting on a bench next to the stroller, plunged into the lake after the boy, screaming, "Boy! Boy! Boy!" witnesses said.

Horrified onlookers quickly dialed 911, and divers found the boy in zero-visibility water within 15 minutes of arriving.

The grandfather, 65, was in stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital Saturday.

The toddler is improving and it looks good but however, the toddler is not out of danger yet.
