France targets anorexia in media

French Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot said the proposed law would help stop advice on how to become ultra-thin being spread through pro-anorexia sites on the internet.

"Encouraging young girls to lie to their doctors, advising them on foods that are easier to regurgitate and inciting them to beat themselves up each time they eat is not freedom of expression," Ms Bachelot told the assembly.

'Death messages'

"These messages are death messages. Our country must be able to prosecute those who are hiding behind these websites," she said.

Jacques Domergue, a lawmaker supporting the bill, said that the intention was to send a strong message to society.

"It is necessary because we know now that we have a risk to some part of the population, young girls, who are pressed by different types of lobbies and the risk is increasing."

The law could also affect the fashion industry and magazine editors who publish photographs of extremely thin models.

If the bill is passed by France's upper house, the Senate, in the coming weeks offenders could face jail sentences of up to two years and 30,000 euros ($47,387; £23,980) in fines.

A three-year term and 45,000 euros in fines could be sought against offenders if the incitement was found to have lead to death.

The BBC's Emma Jane Kirby in Paris says that with 40,000 anorexics in France, many parliamentarians feel the law cannot come soon enough.

40,000 French Anorexics?!

No wonder they wanted to pass this law. Good luck in implementing as well making this law a success.

Get rid of size 0 to 6! Time for models to start wearing size 8 to 12 in general modeling industry.

The models are usually so tall - I hate seeing their bodies, it's painful to me!!!

Why anyone would think that is appealing, I don't know.

I agree.

Sometimes, I walk through the women's clothing department at stores and shudder at the sight of sections containing clothes sized 0 to 6.

While I agree that we encourage our young girls to be unhealthy in their weight, I am one of those people who wears a size 1. But then, I'm only 5' tall and have only weighed over 100 lbs ever when I was pregnant. But that is just my natural body size, not something I try to reach. I've never been on a diet in my life, and God knows I'm not going to make myself puke!

My girlfriend's two daughters around forty are 5' 2" and 5' 3" and have always hovered near 100 pounds. They complain they can't find many adult that fit and end up in styles a lot younger than they're comfortable with. Two skinny cousin sisters are the same.

They've often been accused of anorexia, but the girls chow down like horses. In fact they have to snack a lot in between three square meals.

But I've heard somewhere that 40,000 French people can't be wrong.

LOL!!!

*ahem* I'm 5'2" myself. I had to get on birth control to gain weight... so now I'm a size 5 and happy. I have the same problem with adult clothes, they're all too big or just doesn't fit me in some way. Tops I have no problems with, it's the skirts/pants. "Adult" pants always have a waistline that's just above my natural waistline... and it is very uncomfortable to wear, so I shop in the teen section for the pants that stop at the hips.

Geez, some of you are so lucky! I have to work my butt off just to stay at an average shape. If I dont, I will be extremely chubby. It is so easy for me to gain weight and twice as hard to lose it.

However, I am glad that this is happening cuz even adults like me get tired of seeing all these models looking so super thin and we feel we have to fit that image. I cant imagine what it must be like for teenagers and young women.

I'm reminded of a postcard that the Body Shop used to mail.

It showed a volumptious woman on the front with a saying, " There are 3 billion women who don't look like supermodels and only 8 who do."

You're fine. I have some friends who are like that... 4'11" to 5'1". They're petite and I'm fine with that.

If I walk by the petite section in stores, I don't care... because that's "petite"... which is normal.

However, it does bother me when I walk through the normal sections that have sizes 0 to 6.

I knew a girl who had a nice body... good figure... nice curves. Everyone liked her the way she was. Yet, she developed an obsession with getting her boyfriend's attention and became anorexic. If her boyfriend worked with a woman who was thinner than her, she got jealous and would try to compete to make herself thinner.

Today, she's so skinny that her ribcage shows... her breasts shrunk to almost nothing (used to be D-cup)... her jaw looks big since she has almost no meat on her face... she has no hips... and I'm afraid to hug her cuz I might snap her in half.

Yet, she goes around excitedly bragging to her friends... "Guess what! I wear a size 0!" *shudders*

Exactly. The media/fashion magazines/models, so and on are always portraying what seems to be "perfect' but in reality, it is always not so perfect.

It seems like everything is targeted at looks. I mean, sure, we can dress to be glamorous and look great. It doesn't mean we have to be skinny just so we can look great.

Models are not the only ones we see that are super skinny. There are many other avenues that makes it seem so. All we can do is be ourselves and use the best judgment.

I envy you. LOL. I am quite the opposite of you and contrary to what people think, I don't eat more than what most people eat - IF I don't skip meals. If I skip them, getting hungry can be painful for me as I'm diabetic.

Keeping my weight to a healthy state has been a struggle for me since I was a child. As a rule, I prefer child sized meals as opposed to a full meal as full meals can make me feel sluggish. The rest of my family is like that and no, we don't come from a trailer park. Weight has always been a struggle for all the females in my family.

Yes, I think so much of it depends on your genetic inheritance.

I have no problems with clothes being created in tiny sizes for people like you. But I don't like how they market it for the purpose of encouraging women and girls to be unnaturally thin when they should be wearing healthy size.
