NEW YORK (AFP) - Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has filed for bankruptcy, one week after he was arraigned on charges of third-degree assault, court officials said.

Tyson's filed for Chapter 11 protection on Friday with the US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, the officials said.

Tyson has effectively wiped away 300million dollars he earned in his career wasted on a lavish spending spree including 100,000 dollars on a rare tiger.

He has squandered a fortune once estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars, although the boxer has placed part of the blame on promoter Don King, whom he is suing for 100 million dollars in a case scheduled to go to trial in September.

King reportedly has offered Tyson up to 20 million dollars to drop the lawsuit and renew their alliance from a decade ago, one that ended with Tyson accusing King of skimming money from his match purses.

Tyson's appearances currently seem limited to the courtroom rather than the boxing ring.

On September 3, he will appear to answer assault and disorderly conduct charges stemming from a brawl in thew Marriott Hotel in Brooklyn.

Police say Tyson fought with two fans in the hotel lobby after turning down their autograph request.

Witnesses say the two men, Samuel Velez and Nestor Alvarez, both of Pennsylvania, made fun of Tyson's facial tattoo after their request was denied.

Tyson served three years in prison for the 1992 rape of beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington in an Indianapolis hotel room.

An assault on two motorists, who rear-ended his car, sent Tyson back to prison briefly in 1999.

i personally do not believe hes "broke" like he has said in the media -- i think he just is saying that to get out of his alimony payments to his ex wife and other BS -- Tyson is an IDIOT

i think he has diverted his monies to other accounts possibly overseas or somewhere else where nobody would be able to investigate without warrants

He deserved that!!!!!!!!! After what he did to Holyfield years ago by biting his ear off!

I was watching the match at a party in Mountain View, California in the '90's and the match only went for a few minutes and it really sucked and really pissed everyone for wasting their money on watching a big match between Tyson and Holyfield.
Tyson's definitely a laughingstock of USA.
