Boy at Boot Camp Died "Naturally"

Boy at boot camp died ‘natural death’
Coroner: Death caused by sickle cell anemia, not injuries from guards

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A teenager at a state-run boot camp died from a blood disorder and not from any injuries he may have suffered while being restrained by guards, a medical examiner reported Thursday.

Martin Lee Anderson’s family contends he died from injuries suffered in a confrontation with guards.

Anderson suffered internal bleeding because he had sickle cell trait, a disorder that caused his red blood cells to change shape and produce “a whole cascade of events” that led to hemorrhaging, said Bay County Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Siebert.

“It was a natural death,” he said.

Medical forms filed at the boot camp did not indicate that the youth or his family were aware of the disorder, which affects about one of every eight black people, Siebert said. The sickle cell disorder would not show up in routine blood tests, he said.

Anderson entered the camp Jan. 5 because of an arrest for theft. He complained of breathing difficulties and collapsed during exercises that were part of the entry process. He died the next day at a Pensacola hospital.

Dueling stories
The sheriff’s office, which runs the camp, said Anderson became uncooperative and was restrained. The boy’s mother alleges he was killed by guards who beat him to death.

Siebert said there were some bruises and abrasions on the boy’s body, but he attributed those to attempts to resuscitate the youth.

The Anderson family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, was skeptical of the autopsy results and expressed doubt that the sickle cell trait, if it existed, could cause such extensive damage to the teenager’s internal organs.

Also Thursday, the Justice Department announced it would investigate the case, along with the FBI. Federal officials planned to focus on whether camp guards violated Anderson’s rights through use of excessive force or “indifference to serious medical need,” U.S. Attorney Gregory R. Miller said.

On Friday, law enforcement officials planned to make public a videotape that allegedly shows guards beating Anderson. News organizations filed a lawsuit seeking the video.

Fla. Officials Release Tape in Boy's Death

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Authorities released a video tape Friday showing guards restraining a boy at a juvenile detention boot camp just hours before he died.

The parents of 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson believe the footage, from a boot camp security camera, will show that guards beat their son to death. They were viewing the 1-hour, 20-minute tape at their lawyer's office in Tallahassee as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement made it public.

Two legislators who have seen the tape said Anderson was brutally beaten and kicked before he died Jan. 6. They described an out-of-control situation, with guards punching and choking Anderson even as he went limp.

Anderson's family alleges he was beaten by guards on his first day at the boot camp. A medical examiner determined this week that the teen died from a blood disorder — not from any injuries suffered in a beating.

News organizations had sued for the tape to be made public. The FDLE planned to release it when its investigation was complete, but said Friday it changed plans "due to compelling public interest and speculation as to its contents."

"The viewing of this will result in many questions, concerns and accusations," said Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen.

Anderson entered the camp Jan. 5 because of a probation violation. He complained of breathing difficulties and collapsed during exercises that were part of the entry process. He died the next day at a Pensacola hospital.

The county sheriff's office, which runs the camp, said Anderson was restrained after he became uncooperative.

County Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Siebert said the boy's body had some bruises and abrasions, but he attributed them to attempts to resuscitate the youth.

Siebert said Anderson suffered internal bleeding because he had sickle cell trait, a disorder that caused his red blood cells to change shape and produce "a whole cascade of events" that led to hemorrhaging.

"It was a natural death," he said.

Anderson family attorney Benjamin Crump said he was skeptical of the autopsy results and expressed doubt that the sickle cell trait, if it existed, could cause such extensive damage to the teenager's internal organs.

The Justice Department announced Thursday it would investigate the case, along with the FBI. Federal officials planned to focus on whether camp guards violated Anderson's rights through use of excessive force or indifference to serious medical need.

Anderson was arrested in June for stealing his grandmother's Jeep Cherokee and sent to the boot camp for violating his probation by trespassing at a school.

The boot camp concept for juveniles began in Florida in 1993, and five camps now house about 600 boys ages 14 to 18.

This story is a bit confusing... If the video shows that Martin Anderson was brutally beaten and kicked before he died, then it proves that guards did mistreated the boy at the boot camp, I find this a bit odd when Anderson die from natural causes which he died from a blood disorder not from any injuries suffered in a beating, it is possible that he could have gotten this blood clot from the beating?....

Angel,

Extactly that I felt supscouis isn't coming from Blood disorder...

Yes, I find it odd too. Seems to me that they are covering it up but let's hope that the truth will come out after they take a good look at the video.

Oh my God... It´s impossible for the Boot Camp to deny anything because the video don´t lie. I pray that the court will be on boy´s parent´s side.

All they are saying is that the beating did not cause the boy's death. They will still be accountable for the beating and mistreatment but ruled that it did not cause his death.

To put it into perspective, suppose somebody with this same disorder is driving down the road and then stops at a stoplight. You are driving behind them and accidentally rear-end them...just a minor fender-bender..then the person dies because of the disorder and not because of the accident. Should you be charged with auto manslaughter? You were at fault in the accident but did not cause the death.

The same principle applies here. No, he should not have been beaten and those guards should be dealt with appropriately in beating him...but they did not murder him so there is no manslaughter or murder charge.

I have just reviewed the video tape and this is not a violent beating. I see them restraining him while he was fighting. I see 'arm bars' being used which is joint manipulation to get somebody to comply (putting his arm behind his back). The only punch or kick that I saw was a guard kicking the kids leg out from underneath of him and it was kicking it out of the way and not a direct kick. Because of the death, the incident should be investigated but from what is on that video, there is nothing that is out of line that would cause injury to the kid, let alone his death.

it doesnt matter if the beathings caused him to die or not...using certain violence against kids is still illegal and dead wrong.

What I'm questioning in my second post is where is the violence? Holding somebody down and restraining them does not equal a violent beating. Rodney King was beaten...this kid was not.

 Boy, what a confusing story. You don't which version to believe. Thank you Taylor for giving us some insight on what you saw. The parent's though had to be very disturbed to see that video tape, and I truly hope that things get resolved for everyone involved.

I tried to see the video but I have dail-up and it's hard to get the video loading, since it went really really slow, I'll ask RR later on to see it from his computer since he has cable....

Once I take a look at it, then I'll post what I think, but thanks for letting us know Taylor :thumb:
