Burroughs unhurt by thrown phone

CHICAGO -- For the second time in less than a week, a cell phone was thrown onto the field at a Major League ballpark, grazing San Diego Padres third baseman Sean Burroughs' foot at Wrigley Field.
The incident happened in the eighth inning of the Padres' 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. Burroughs was unhurt in the incident, saying the phone barely hit him.

"I was at third base, throwing the ball to the pitcher after an out, (standing) in fair territory," Burroughs said. "It hit me in the right foot. It barely nicked me, I barely felt it. It wasn't like an impact knock. But who knows what (happens) if it hit me square."

Burroughs said he picked up the phone and gave it to third base umpire Gary Darling.

"All cell phones have a PIN number. Hopefully they'll chase the PIN number," Burroughs said. "It could have been stolen when the guy threw it at me, but at the same time, maybe the guy had a couple too many brewskies and didn't realize it and threw it at me. Hopefully we'll find the culprit."

Cubs director of media relations Sharon Pannozzo said a report was filed with Chicago police, who had possession of the phone. She said the report states that at 3:40 p.m. CT, a phone was thrown in the general direction of Cubs third base coach Wendell Kim and the umpire. According to the police report, it did not hit anyone.

Saturday, a fan at Oakland's Network Associates Coliseum threw a cell phone at Texas Rangers outfielder Carl Everett. That fan was later identified by witnesses in the stands and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon.

"There's no excuse for it. It's just immature," said Burroughs. "I'm sure whoever did this heard about the episode with Texas and someone throwing at Everett and whatnot and they think it's the norm to do, cool to do. But that's so idiotic."

The Wrigley incident occurs with the city still embarrassed about an incident April 15 at crosstown U.S. Cellular Field where four fans ran onto the field at a White Sox game. One of them attacked umpire Laz Diaz and was charged with assault and is being held on $250,000 bail.

Despite the experience, Burroughs said he doesn't think less of baseball fans here.

"This has nothing to do with Chicago," he said. "This was my first time here. I enjoyed it. The fans, they love their Cubs. Obviously, they're going to rag you a little bit, but I was pretty surprised when an object came on the field."

Burroughs said he was less scared than angry.

"I was more ticked off. You can take all the verbal stuff but once it gets physical, I was pretty steamed," he said.
