Firm hits brakes on ‘road kill' candy Production halted as activists call animal-shaped sweets tasteless New Jersey animal activists want this candy taken off the shelves.

TRENTON, N.J. - Production of roadkill-shaped candy screeched to a halt Friday, as Kraft Foods Inc. announced it would stop manufacturing the treats amid protests by animal rights activists.

"We take comments from our consumers really seriously and, in hindsight, we understand that this product could be misunderstood," said Kraft spokesman Larry Baumann.

Kraft plans to stop production of the fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candyas soon as possible and then sell off remaining inventory, Baumann said.

The announcement came after the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals protested that the the candy, which is shaped like critters run over by cars — complete with tire treads — encouraged children to be cruel to animals.

"It sends the wrong message to children, that it's OK to harm animals. And that's the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft," said society spokesman Matthew Stanton.

I don't believe Kraft's intentions were to encourage the children to be cruel to animals. But not every idea will please everyone.

I think it sends the message to kids that you can whine and get your way. I don't see anything wrong with the candy....keep in mind that it is just candy....just like my generation grew up with garbage pale kids, etc. I don't see that inspiring children to live in trash cans, etc.

Oh, good grief!

If there is some candy maker who is stupid enough to waste their time, energy, and money on a loser product such as that, then let them. I doubt that the chain supermarkets and department stores will put them on their shelves, and the free market will take care of the situation. They can sell their pitiful product on the internet to people dopey enough to buy it.

I grew up in an era when candy cigarettes were popular, and I never wanted to start smoking from that. Candies that were "racist" were popular but I never became a racist.

Kids already eat candy "bugs" and "snakes"; is it any worse for them to eat squashed ones?

Besides, real roadkill is something that has been randomly hit by a vehicle and has been exquisitely aged out in the elements. Candy roadkill can't compete with that delicacy.

Animal crackers were introduced in 1902 and kids have delighted ever since by biting their heads off! Except for some crazed rock bands, I haven't heard of anyone biting the head off of a live animal.

I agree with you, Taylor. Personally, I think Kraft would have been better off showing some backbone. Animal rights activist have a right to their opinion, but some of the tactics they use to demonstrate their point is outrageous. I'm trying to recall something having to do with a campaign against milk???

**thinking** Shoot ..What was it? Can anyone help me??? PETA wanted to say that people shouldn't drink milk, and they went on a campaign making the claim that milk was unhealthy. They also aimed it a children?????? That's all I recall about it. Anyway, my point is... PETA has used all kinds of devisive tactics to prove their point. Some of it can be a bit much.

Shame on Kraft for caving in.

So what?? If I go store next time, I will look for Roadkill candy.. I love eat those kind of candies (fruity not real roadkill)... PETA is being silly! There are Easter Bunny, bat, cat, lil chicks candies during holidays, did PETA complained?? NO! I have ate choclate and Peeps marshallows candies.. There are easter eggs!! let kids and us have some fun eating! PETA should take it easy!!

It doesn't matter to me as a parent, I just won't buy that for my children since of the name of the candy on the bag that say " Road Kill " isn't such a good name but still it doesn't mean you can buy them....They used to have those cigarettes candy years ago which was very popular at that time, my parents wouldn't allow me to buy it....so I can understand where they are coming from on this, but there no needed to take it off the shelves because we will have something out there that may not be good for children to see or have, you can either buy it or not and the company who made that can either lose money or make money...

Yes, candy cigarettes. I think they still sell these but they aren't as easy to find as they used to be. They're made out of chocolate with paper wrapped around it like a real cigarette would be.

I used to eat these candies when I was younger, yet I never started smoking. Not even a real puff.

My cigarettes candies wasnt chocolate. It was more like hummmmmmm what should I say but it better then chocolate. I can find them at one store the I know of and it cost me .15 per box. Still do buy them.

Wow, thanks for the cool link! It brought back many memories. I saw many of my childhood candies listed there. I loved them back then, but now when I read the ingredients in them I think, yuck, that doesn't sound good, ha, ha. I am sure I wouldn't like to eat them now.

I found another candy at the site that became politically incorrect. The "Chocolate Babies" (also known by other names) was considered "racist" by some people. Interesting.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Going off topic a bit, but I remember "flesh" colored crayons, and because they were considered politically incorrect, they stopped using that "color."

Yes it was white not chocolate I was like eh? when Banjo said chocolate cuz I don't remember a chocolate one ....


I used to eat that candy long time ago too but not too much through It was alright back in the old days.

But, I don't think children would pay attention to labeled on the candies's bag they usual eat the candies much in a rush than reading the package.

Actually, they just shouldn't be eating tons of candies. These kids I've seen on Super Nanny had consumed quite a large amount of junk food which is why the parents had such a difficult time controlling them.

Only a tiny amount of candies should be allowed to be consumed if the kids want some. There's nothing wrong with eating some once in a while. Fruits and vegetables... doesn't exactly appeal to kids that much as a treat.
