Young Voters not buying privatization
Yay. I am so glad that young votes does not buy this crap. Check this out:
Washington, DC - Feb. 03, 2005 A new poll shows young voters may not be the political base that some politicians expect for phasing out Social Security in favor of private investments. Released by Rock the Vote, AARP, and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the poll finds that nearly sixty percent of 18-39 year olds oppose private accounts if it would mean “a lower guaranteed benefit in retirement.” The survey of 1000 adults, conducted by Roper Public Affairs, reaches similar conclusions to previous polls: many young people doubt they will receive Social Security and are receptive, at first blush anyway, to the idea of investing their own Social Security money. But when they consider the price of creating private accounts, young people, like the majority of Americans, no longer support them. In releasing the poll, Rock the Vote’s Washington Director Hans Riemer said, “This poll shows that young people do not support changing Social Security if it means dismantling the basic safety net, cutting benefits dramatically, or massively increasing the national debt. We get all three at once under most private account plans. We hope the politicians who say they want to help younger generations are paying attention.” Other findings of the poll among 18-39 year olds include:
Quote:
Additional comments from Hans Riemer, Rock the Vote’s Washington Director, follow: “Right now, Social Security is 100% funded for 40-50 years and 80% funded after that. Young people should know this because when we understand the real financial picture for Social Security, we are in a much better position to deal with politicians who want to talk us into giving up our benefits—which is precisely what many of them are trying to do. We want elected officials to get to work now on bolstering Social Security so that it can payfull benefits for future retirees. We support private accounts on top of Social Security, and we hope tolead the politicians to a compromise here. A lot of what we are hearing about potential benefit cuts and borrowing for private accounts concerns us. The benefit cuts fall almost entirely on our shoulders. So does paying back the debt. Now is the time for young people to cut through the hype and start asking some hard questions about Social Security.” Source: http://www.rockthevote.com/media/press.php?ID=65 http://www.rockthevote.com/pdf/soc_sec_pr_acc.pdf [Acrobat reader required] http://www.rockthevote.com/pdf/RTVSSrelease02-03-05.pdf [Acrobat reader required] That is like music to my eyes. |

Young people dont understand what freedom is. Theyre used to having their parents taking care everything for them. Theyre used to having their mommys and daddys telling them what they can spend their money on and how much they get. Theyre not used to freedom and independance like older people enjoy.

Mag, it is very understandable. My youngest sister is 22 and she has worked to support herself throughout high school and college. She will graduate in May and continue her studies at a law school. I have often joked that she will end up supporting me because by the time I m eligible for SS, there wont be any money left.
This generation is far more wiser and sophisciated. |

I cannot remember where I read but it mentioned something that hit me hard. Know what republicans & conservatives hate most? Youth people because of their 'strong' freethinking philosophy. Hence why they hit them harder thru election day when compare to other age groups. As I told Reba sometimes ago that our youth generation is getting smarter and wiser than ever. |

But ranting/whining is a part of training to enter a deaf world? Your nonstop postings here helps you get trained when in fact you refuse to LISTEN OR TAKE any help we have offered? I think you are not getting trained..I think you are just postponing the ultimate destiny. |

magatsu, thxs for posting this article.
Even though paying SS taxes can be a PITA sometimes, but I will be rest assured that there is a safety net once I retire from working a few decades down the road. Remember SS is not intended to be a sole source of retirement income. Dumbya will have a hard time getting his stupid-assed privization plan rammed thru Congress without pissing a lot of ppl off especially senior citizens. Besides there is already a kind of private retirement accounts already set in place namely IRA's (Traditional and Roth), 401k's, company-funded pension plans, military pensions, you name it. |

sablescort, Yeah Social Security tax can be pain in the ass but it does worth our time and our taxes for elders, disabilities, etc etc.. In fact, Social Security is the best invention ever in human history. |

Like Newt Gingrich said """ The only people should get goverment assistance is your elderly and the disabled. And Newt Gingrich said the social security system should be changed and raise the retirement age to 70. This should not apply people who are over 35. If youre under 35 you should wait until youre 70.'''

I agree that Social Security is awesome, one of the FEW programs that actually WORK.
But I wouldn't put my faith in the really young people to understand the nuances of this subject. I saw a poll recently where about 35% of high school students think that the media ought to be censored, that the government ought to approve all printed material before being published. That is truly frightening. USA's psy-ops is good, really really good. |

Beowulf, poor education and lack of 'deep debate/discussion' is the biggest problem. Many kids don't know many things these days but they do know that they need to support the elders thru Social Security because they will become old when their time is up. Also I found out that poll you spoke of is biased due to tricky questions. I will explain bit more in other time whenever I find that blasted article.
Privatization is poor plan, danger and failure to boot. |

Don't misunderstand me, Mag, I am not putting down our teens. Like you, I put the blame squarely on the material they are presented with.
It is just that I KNOW for a fact that in an average high school, when there is a "debate" concerning the Iraq "war", emotions run very high and you would be shocked at how many of them swallow everything the government or its serf media tells them. The "dumbing down" of America is rather deliberate, I fear. |

Social Security, as a part of the "New Deal" era was a true home run when FDR and his boys first set it up. Social Security was one part of the "Alphabet Soup" plans that FDR cooked up to get America out of the Great Depression during the mid 1930's. Social Security and the Tennessee Valley Authority , I'm possibly sure, are the only surviving agencies left over from the New Deal Era still operating presently. |
