Burger King is in merger talks with Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons, a deal that would allow the burger seller to relocate out of the U.S. and possibly cut its tax bill.

The new company would be headquartered in Canada, the two firms said in a joint statement. Both Tim Hortons (THI) and Burger King (BKW) would continue to operate as standalone brands.

By moving north of the border, Burger King would be completing what is called an "inversion" -- a strategy that allows U.S. firms to lower their tax bills by merging with a foreign company, and then relocating to the new country.

Corporate tax rates are lower in Canada than the U.S., which has the highest tax rate among developed economies.

In the case of Miami-based Burger King and Tim Hortons, the combined company would be the world's third largest fast food chain, generating $22 billion in sales at more than 18,000 restaurants in 100 countries worldwide.

Is Burger King moving to Canada?

I think they are just going to set up new Burger Kings in Canada if all the Burger King businesses were successful in USA. I don't know about moving but it is like a phrase which meant that the next business for Burger King is the next step to try and build the Burger King locations in cities and hoping the Burger King business were successful. In another word is they (Burger King Corporation(s)) want to make that move to the next step on working and putting Burger King in Canada.

If the Burger King failed, then that will be abandon the idea of having Burger King there. Don't forget that McDonald had set up businesses in other countries and they seem to successful until a few McDonald businesses fail recently, I think. :hmm:

EDIT: As for Tim Hortons which is Canadian and remain Canadian. I don't think the Canadians like the idea of having Tim Hortons going to USA or any other country unless the Tim Hortons Corporation or Company want to do that without the permission from the Canadian society. :dunno:

no no. they're talking about moving its headquarter. right now - it's based in America.... which means they're required by law to pay for American corporate tax. by relocating its headquarter to Canada... they do not have to pay for American corporate tax.

American corporate tax is notoriously high and complex. that's why one of Facebook cofounders denounced his American citizenship and moved to Singapore. He saved several million tax dollars that way.

Thank you for clearing that up that the corporations are thinking of saving corporate tax and want to find somewhere like Asia to save money. China is still the largest cheap price for American business for us customers to pay. Corporations are a pain in the butt which they are being selfish and not care for their employees who need jobs badly in USA. :(

it's two different issues.

China - that's for cheap manufacturing and labor. Many American corporations are still located in America.

It's also partially American government's fault for making corporate tax system complicated and high. It would be in America's best interest to revise its tax system to keep the jobs in here.

If it isn't the American governments fault who's fault is it? They are the ones who are setting the tax codes. The problem is they have created to many loopholes for their corporate buddies to shelter their wealth by going offshore, and it only encourages them to do so. Our government officials could care less about the regular citizens of the US and we in the end will take up the slack for these companies headquarters moving out of the US.

I think the government will fix that soon, they already cracked down on offshore savings and banking....

it's the other way around. the corporations keep finding loopholes and they're very good at it.

They are moving because Obama feels he needs to punish those job creators.

Only for oil and gas companies like pipelines to keep our Mother Earth from pollution and need clean waters like the ocean, rivers, and lakes. Everything on Mother Earth is polluted.

Burger King and McDonalds or other fast food restaurants would be okay. Still if we can keep them here and hire people to work in them. People need jobs. :hmm:

Burger King and McDonalds are one of the worst polluters. Look at where they get their food from.... and how the animals are treated.

I certainly hope Tim Hortons will be everywhere here. it's a dang good coffee :)

Yep, coffee was very delicious. I don't know but that would be up to the Tim Hortons corporation or company if they decide to go into USA and/or overseas. :(
