This shooting occurred less than 4 miles away from where Michael Brown was killed.

Cell Phone Video Emerges That Refutes St. Louis Cops Version of Shooting | The Free Thought Project
St. Louis- On Tuesday, while tensions continued to simmer in Ferguson, just a few miles away 25-year-old Kajieme Powell was gunned down by St. Louis cops.

Officers claimed that they were in fear of their lives as Powell charged at them with a knife. They claim he had the knife in an “overhand grip” and came within three feet of the officers, at which time they opened fire, killing Powell.

The incident stemmed from a call by a Six Star Market owner after Powell allegedly stole two energy drinks, according to KSDK.

Reports from witnesses claim that Powell was acting erratically, pacing back and forth on the street and talking to himself, while carrying a knife.

St. Louis Metro Police Chief Sam Dotson responding to a question of whether the shooting was justified said his officers “have a right to go home at night” going on to say that all officers have a right to defend themselves.

He went on to defend his officers actions saying that they used deadly force due to the suspect with a knife coming within three of four feet of the officers, which would be considered within lethal range.

New cell phone video has emerged that calls into question officer’s version of events, and Dotson’s defense of his officers, leading up to the shooting.

In the video two cops arrive together, exit the vehicle, and demand Powell drop the knife. Powell begins yelling “shoot me, shoot me, shoot me now,” as walks onto a ledge then steps off as if to approach.

Powell, who had his hands at his sides, never came within more than 10-15 feet of the officers before they opened fire killing him.

As the man recording the incident stated,

“They could have tazed that man.”
Surely the officers could have utilized non-lethal force in this situation.

It seems that these officers, and Police Chief Dotson, think they are the only ones that “have a right to go home at night.”

The police turned a call about two stolen energy drinks into a murder, of course they will say it was justified, so they could go home at night… sadly, Kajieme Powell will never be able to go home again.

It’s this us or them mentality that has created the conditions we see in Ferguson and around the country, as the warrior cop has no sense how to diffuse a situation, but rather only how to use force and brutality on those they are sworn to protect and serve.

this video contradicted with cops' claims that Kajieme Powell came at them with a knife.... which never happened. The most disturbing part was that the cops continue to shoot at him while he was on ground - "late shot". This is clearly a murder. an execution.

That remind me of this deaf guy who held a carving knife got shot and killed in Seattle.

I'm sensing more riots are gonna happen once word gets out about this. The DOJ already has their hands full with the Brown case, and I'm pretty sure this is gonna be investigated by them similarly to the Ferguson case, or better yet, more deeper investigation to see if police use excessive force too much, which they did in NM not long ago.

DOJ is a very big government. They have lot of hands

excessive force is not an issue in here. the bigger issue is a contradiction in cops' testimonies. they lied.. falsified the police reports... and the worst part... a finishing execution when Powell was on ground.

Excessive force might not be the issue, but I'll say this: things need to change, and fast. Cops can't be shooting and asking questions later, as that usually ends very badly. Better they find out what's going on first, and go from there.

yup. there seems to be a growing pattern of armed aggression by cops in Missouri :hmm:

1. An officer pointing a rifle at journalist, screaming "I'll f'ing kill you"
2. Two officers shooting at Powell and lied that Powell came at them with a knife
3. Officer Wilson and Michael Brown - well we'll have to wait and see if there is a gun residue on Brown's clothing or not.

Looks like it is cheaper to kill than sending him to court, DA, jail, waste taxpayers money?

Oh wow! another shooting in Chicago and they shot the guy as he was putting down his rifle too:

dead witness is better than live witness.

and cops didn't realize that there was somebody who recorded the whole thing

Don't be surprised if they arrest the person and charge him with felony eavesdropping, which, I need to remind all here, was struck down by the Illinois Supreme Court last spring. Not sure about MO, though.

dude.... you need to know the law accurately before you speak.

Supreme Court has already ruled that a cop cannot arrest a person recording a public incident on public property because it's protected by First Amendment.

a "felony eavesdropping" is when you secretly record a conversation without permission with a hidden recording device. This typically applies if there's audio involved.. video-only is not covered by this except peeping tom - ie... installing a hidden camera in bathroom or changing room.

Yes, I know. The law in Illinois went further than that. No one was allowed to record police officers anywhere in the state, but that got struck down before NATO came to town, if memory serves me correctly.

I am pretty upset about the way cops are not doing the right job. Powell was shot 9 times and when he was already on the ground or sidewalk. The cops have the nerve to put handcuff on his wrists when he was already gone (dead). Powell was not going anywhere if the cops was that paranoid. These whole thing does not make any sense.

I think Powell was making the statement that like being in protest to see what the cops would do if he had stolen two energy drinks plus some snack when he thought the cops would not come. He seem to have plan out what he wanted to do. So that is exactly what would happen when the cop from Ferguson had killed Michael Brown for no reason at all. The cops did not take the time to calm him down and ignore his pleas. If Powell had a knife right beside himself, not threatening at them. Powell was upset because of what happen to Michael Brown. I don't know what Powell would do with his knife. It could be a pocket knife. But still I feel the officers need to go back to the Police Academies and learn how to work with people who have problems of their own like mental illness or getting upset about something.

Yes, it is exactly the same what happen to the deaf Native American who had a small knife and a board as he does use them for sculpture as part of his art forms. Like Powell, the deaf Native wanted to walked up to the cop as he had a hard time not understanding the cop and the cop shot and kill him just like that. :(
