This is happening more and more. The largest pharmaceutical company in the world Pfizer is also pulling up stakes by acquiring a much smaller pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom. Something is seriously wrong with the regulatory and tax environment in the United States when companies start to move out to find greener pastures in London. Maybe instead of Democrats berating companies leaving the U.S. as unpatriotic, they should actually make the United States into the most attractive place to do business in the world again.

Decatur, IL. Walgreens CEO, Gregory D. Wasson, announced that it plans to move its corporate headquarters to Switzerland as part of a merger with Alliance Boots, a European drugstore chain. The move will allow Walgreens profits to be taxed a lower rate in Switzerland and reduce Walgreens taxes in Illinois.

Walgreens plans the move, even though the taxpayers of Illinois gave it a $6 million tax credit over a period of 10 years, provided $625,000 in training money and $875,000 in additional tax incentives.

Walgreens tax strategy is called “an inversion.” A U.S. company buys or merges with a foreign company in a low tax jurisdiction, moves its headquarters there, but continues to generate business and profits in the U.S.

According to the New York Times, Neill Geiser, assistant director of Change to Win Initiatives said, “It is unconscionable that Walgreens is considering this tax dodge – especially in light of the millions of dollars it receives from the U.S. taxpayers each year.”

Walgreens received $16.7 billion from Medicare and Medicaid last year. Walgreens’ move will cost U.S. taxpayers about $4 billion over a period of 5 years. (Andrew Sorkin, “Renouncing Corporate Citizenship” N.Y Times, July 1, 2014 p. B8)

What can a citizen do ? Since Walgreens plans a move, so should you – move your prescription business to the privately owned small pharmacies in our town. Send a message that Walgreens CEO will really get.

I don't shop at Walgreen nor CVS anymore due their price is ridiculously higher than Walmart and Target.

We don't have a Target and Walmart does not deliver. I need that available if I am ever sick enough to not want to get out (but not in the hospital) or the weather bad enough that I do not want to drive.

The only time we shop at CVS or Walgreens is if we need to buy a greeting card (birthday, anniversary, etc.).

I get my meds at Walgreens...really hate it because they are so damn s-l-o-w!....but my Insurance recommends them....but am changing Insurance companies in October!...Really sick of Wellcare!..am going to find out if the new Insurance carrier will deliver to my door...if so?...Great!

Visited a "new super store CVS" not long ago....really terrible!...Such cheap stuff in there....

The lines at Walmart are a mile long, even the pick-up ones. Haven't tried Target...but guessing they are the same way.

I no longer buy greeting cards, they cost way too much $$$. When I see one I like it cost about $4.00 and it seen crazy to spend that much on a card that will only be thrown into the trash after person read it. I rather give the spend the money on person than give it Hallmark. Walgreen is insanely slow. I went to buy a pill for my dog b/c he was just stung a bee
and I could believe how long it took to one item .

Seems to be a local thing. I know RR and I are not even in the same state but not sure about WDYS. Although by far most of what I get are refills and call them in before going to pickup.

Drive-thru pickup???......worst I've ever seen. I've complained, other people have complained...The one near me has 2 drive-thrus...they blocked the 2nd one, so you cannot use it....Going inside to pick up?....Same thing...long lines....Walgreens have a hard time keeping employees also...always someone new at the pickup window....must be the salary ??....Whatever the case may be...Walgreens had horrible customer service.

Sorry that is what you have to put up with to use them. It must be like they say about real estate "Location, Location, Location". Where I am I have had no problems (small Southern Illinois town with only one drive thru lane at the only Walgreen's in town)!

Buy a lot of medicines as precaution and leave in kitchen cabinet or medicine cabinet.

My grandma keeps all greeting cards. :cool2:

You don't know ahead of time what doctor is going to tell you to take.

All doctor office closed after hours, except for ER departments.

I never fill my medicine at Walgreen nor CVS, so I only fill my medicine at Target but use Walmart or local pharmacy if I need get one without drive so far.

I don't see Walgreen nor CVS as necessary to my life, IMO.

I don't know where you are getting the "after hours" part.

What I was talking about is that you don't know what you doctor is going to have you take for some illness before you get sick. So. . . you can't stock up ahead of time.

Walgreens bought out Kerr drug and changed it over a few months ago which was where I've been going for years and haven't had anything but trouble since the change over from being slow to not filing the insurance right and trying to bill me the full amount because a Walgreens employee made a mistake to actually LOSING a prescription. Last time I picked a couple up I used the drive thru and the pharmacist herself got my stuff and she's never done that. Only 2 or 3 people not counting her stayed after the change over.

I don't understand your last paragraph.

None of my doctor told me to use Walgreen or CVS.

I think Janie Bee misunderstood your comment that you stock up on "under the counter" meds rather than what they hide in the back from all the crazies....lol
Common cold meds and vitamins,ect...
Rather than all the good stuff the government wont let us have unless we spend a fortune for it all first...lol

Medications have an expiration date when they're no longer effective so hoarding them doesn't make sense financially. I'll bet many people have creams, medicines or even canned food that's five years past their expiration...

I have approached this as a discussion of filling prescriptions. I didn't see anything to make me think the discussion was about OTC meds that you don't need a prescription for.

Foxrac seems to be deliberately "playing" dense rather than really misunderstanding. Like where did he get the "after hours" part which I saw no reference to before his.
