Cabbie longhauling

This is new to me. Who does this, and why do they do it?

I wonder if other jurisdictions have similar rules?

Lots of cab drivers do it. They take advantage of anybody who doesn't know the shortest route.

And that's not right. If I ever get into a cab, I'd make sure to do my homework beforehand.

Just like in a bar when you order a shot scotch or whiskey, if you don't specify what you want you get bar slop shit.
Same with cabs
Get in tell him not only where you go but how you go
