New $15 Minimum Wage in Chicago?

I worry about how long it will be a livable wage. How many people will be let go - and how much will prices inflate to balance the profit margin? More then just minimum wage earners will be hurt if food prices go up - which is where the bulk of the effected jobs are.
I don't mean to imply that a higher minimum wage is bad, just that it is complicated. Companies like McDonalds have demonstrated they are profit minded - they will just look for other ways to get money. Grocery stores may be forced to cut back on sales. Dinner will be more expensive.

Actually in that source there is this quote:

Lisa McComb, a company spokeswoman, said McDonald’s, along with the independent owner/operators of the individual restaurants, are closing the three eateries “due to the fact that we have lost our lease.”

I would understand the counterpoint if they clearly stated that they are closing due to increased wages.

One issue I see is the increasing proportion between CEO and low-level employees. That, and McDonald's isn't exactly hurting for business. I would understand sticking with cheap wages if they can't even afford it. But when the CEOs are flying in their own million dollar jets and earning 6 figure salaries they have no excuse to at least share the wealth a little.

And Armored car drivers earn only $11 at the highest level and they carry a gun and can be killed in the line of duty. Meanwhile, someone flips a burger and has no education of hygiene or food management (beyond high school, if that) and spends their day "you want fries with that?" and they get $15 an hour. Let's brace for the price hike on fast foods and some businesses closing because they can't afford the workers....great idea....

You want a livable wage, don't take a students job....

THAT!

People need to stop screwing around and make education a priority. Too bad that there are too many illiterate parents having children and the odds of their children becoming illiterate and high school dropouts are higher. It is a vicious cycle that leads to adults taking jobs that pay minimum wage to support their families.

^ Blunt and to the point! ^
Rather then focusing on minimum wage I think government involvement would be more successful if it focused on creating conditions that increase the quantity of better jobs and training pathways for those who need help getting in to them.

Yes, the income inequality is getting wider now. :(

There was also this:

The new rules “have to be part of any contract we negotiate,” said Martin, adding that many vendor partners “have verbally indicated hesitation” to accept contract changes reflecting the revised wage rules.

“At the end of the day, there will be fewer jobs,” said the industry source. “And for [the contractors] who stick it out, there will be higher costs and the customers will pay more.”

The two AAFES contractors asking to be released from their contracts did so after the new Labor Department wage rules were released.

These McDonald's (and other fast fooderies) are individual franchises. They don't share in the wealth of the corporate CEO's.

When the MW law becomes effective, armored guards in a city or state with the new law will earn $15 per hr as well. It doesn't require a higher education to become a guard either. They know the risk. "Take it or leave it."

Who decides on pay cut, pay increase, etc? Of course it's CEOs. They always give themselves a big raise. It's not a fiction. Many corporations still pay their employees a MW as well regardless of McDonalds and other franchises.

but... franchisees, aka business owners in individual, franchised fast food are responsible for rest of expenses so they may not afford to pay more wage to employees.

If all McDonald's are company owned so it will be very different story - share a wealth in all fast food places.

I favor MW laws due to cost of living. Hello?

If there's no MW laws, oh man, things could get worse.

Yeah I just edited my post. Oh, does McDonald's have a headquarter? If so, that's where CEOs are.

The local franchise owners have to manage their stores. It's their profit margin that gets hurt when costs go up. That's a fact.

For those stores that are corporate, not franchises, then if they become non-profitable, they get closed by the CEO's. That means fewer stores for the customers, and fewer jobs for local people. For those stores that tough it out, they'll have to raise prices to cover their higher expenses. That cuts in to the customers' buying power.

I saw but - franchisees are responsible for expenses, not McDonald's corporate so franchisees only get 20% profit, or less than that.

Many franchises - 10% profit.

Franchises have very higher failure rate, so increase of minimum wage will effectively kill most, if not all franchisees.

However, it may force McDonald's to abandon the franchising and build a company owned fast food.

For me, I support to increase the minimum wage but businesses need to reform the franchising.

Don't blame on MW only since gas prices, supplies prices, lease and anything else that costs them goes up are factors, too. For example, a corporate orders power cords for their products. Price for power cords increase and/or shipping rates for shipping power cords increase, therefore the prices for their products increase. MW has nothing to do with it.

$15 Minimum-Wage Referendum A Big Win For Activists -- But Will It Happen? - The Loop - DNAinfo.com Chicago

I hope this will happen for real, it's time for a livable wage and just maybe our favorite resident will be able to afford his dream of real quarters! :D
:laugh2: That's hilarious and made me laugh...

To the real point...

I'm sorry... I know people with bachelors degrees that don't hardly make $15.00 an hour and you want to go to work in McDonalds with no high school diploma and expect to make $15.00 an hour?!?! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! You want to make that much per hour, go to school and apply yourself and get a real education like the rest of the people out there! Stop being lazy and expecting the world to be handed to you dear lord! Paying $15 a hour to fast food employees would cause such a terrible economic shift they can't POSSIBLY begin to fathom! They'd be able to understand if they WENT TO COLLEGE!!! No, I'm not saying all of them aren't in college or won't go. I'm just saying you can't expect to work at a place like McDonalds and make that kind of pay! This would absolutely destroy us! I have friends of mine that are police officers that make $15 and hour. Oh, so people who go out and risk their lives and get SHOT at every day can make the same pay to mess up peoples cheeseburgers?!?! BULL SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That makes me so angry.... People are so f**king stupid I swear to god I just... good.... omg... I support increasing the minimum wage but THAT is just...
