Pastor: Visit would be wakeup call for troubled youths

The Rev. Ken Adkins, a pastor from Brunswick, often finds himself on the forefront of controversial issues, but Thursday he brought one up.

Adkins wrote a letter to Gov. Rick Scott, asking him permission to allow at-risk eighth graders to visit death row.

"Young people are visual. They need to be able to see and I believe especially those who are at the beginning edge of getting in trouble," said Adkins.

Adkins told Channel 4 that the idea behind the suggestion is so that kids can see firsthand the consequences of making reckless decisions.

"You have people very younger doing heinous things to each other and there ought to be, there has to be a certain level of consequences of accountability of responsibility, and the quicker we can teach young people that, the better off this world is going to be," said Adkins. "I think, you know, if you're big enough to do the crime, you're going to have to deal with the fact that you're big enough to do the time, and that is why again that we got to be able to show these young people this is not the road you want to go down."

Adkins' idea was not very popular with parents Channel 4 spoke with Thursday.

"It could be very traumatic. There's other deterrents than taking kids to death row, letting them see something like that," said Umar Abdul-Hakeem.

"I don't agree with that, too much for kids. I don't agree with that at all," said Al Chambers.

Not everyone thought visiting death row would be too much for teens to handle; some thought it could help redirect troubled youth.

"I think it's a wonderful idea because there's so many kids that are not being parented correctly, and if that works for them and they don't stay in trouble that would be wonderful," said Kathy LeSage.

"One thing that won't work is for us: to remain silent is travesty, will be a travesty if we remain silent. Somebody got to talk about it. Somebody has to do something. It has to start somewhere," said Adkins.

Adkins said he is not sure what will happen with his proposal, but he thinks it may be a program that could start in northeast Florida.

It would be a good idea to take kids to a local county jail to give them an idea of what jail/prison looks like and see how prisoners want to get out, but cannot because of their crime(s). It is not necessary for kids to go directly to where prisoners are on death row.

Seems like a good idea. I support it. It might be too much if they saw the execution but seen death row inmates, good idea. But even then, some might need to see an execution so they see the reality of it.

It would just suffice to see a local county prison. Also, I'm not quite sure about death row inmates being allowed to have visitors. I know for certain that some death row inmates and prisoners who are in for life cannot have visitors.

I guess it could be a xountry prision is enough for some. But there will always be a few who need a little more shock.

The best way to give them a shock would be to bring them to a local county jail and say, "You are going to stay here for one night. See you tomorrow morning." LOL.

Watched this show on the A&E channel about troubled teens...name of it escapes me at the moment...but anyhow...in one State, they did show kids the ins-and-outs of jail and prisons....even "fake" people in body bags...one kid was crying about it all....but some kids, they even laughed at it....

Would it be a good idea?...yes, I do, if the kid was really an extreme "at-risk"....But some parents just tend to coddle their kids and overlook their behaviors....thinking they'll straighten up sooner or later.....Some kids are beyond "shocking"...and jail and prison is the only route they will be going.

Some kids don't care at all and they don't mind if they die.

I think it got some positives, better they see it not end up on it.
Some place in America did let kids stay in jail for 24hours the warders treated them same as inmates not nice...I saw documentary about it

Yep...that's it...Unfortunately, seemed like many of them continued to smoke pot, cut school and disrespect their parents. So guessing the "real thing" (prison) would be the only recourse for them...sad as it is tho'.

because their life is piece of sh*t.

I'm not concern if they use pot to make them happy, but cut the school isn't right thing; however, there are many low paying jobs that left teenagers no optimistic about their future.

This happens because parents are not doing any real parenting and children are being left to themselves. As a result, they are not taught morals and values. Ignorance is truly not bliss!

and schools don't support teenagers too.

There is cases in which parents do their best and yet the child doesnt really care. But got to admit there is parents and schools that dont do their job

If the parents did their best and the child still makes bad choices in life, this shows that the parent(s) didn't really have the right skills to work with the child. A parent can say, "I did my best. I gave them food, clothes, shelter, and attention." However, the parent(s) didn't really take the time to properly train the child from his/her youth.

You cannot put the blame on the school because in actuality, it is not the school's duty to discipline children like a parent would because students are there to learn. If parents disciplined their children properly, there wouldn't be any problems at school and the learning can be maximized.

This is why this world is getting worse and worse with each generation. Truly sad.

I just on the news two young guys getting arrested for shooting BB guns at some people , one was woman the got hit in the head . The 2 punks where laughing as they where getting into the police car.

It might made an impact on some kids going to death row but other may think it's cool.

I believe this Pastor (as per the OP) is truly hoping to help those kids who are "at risk"....some kids come from a single-parent home, live in the sub-standard housing...ghettos, etc., addicts/alcoholics for parent(s)....list goes on and on.

Still even the "best" kids can turn out wrong....It's not the schools or teachers responsibility, but there are teachers who do care and give 110%....after school activities and on the weekends are a good start....boredom is a main culprit a lot of times for kids.....Mentors are needed too...many kids just want someone to listen to them...sometimes not getting attention to their problems at home....
