BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
A U.S. Forest Service Officer and a suspect were both killed Wednesday during a manhunt after a couple was found dead in a Burke County home Wednesday.
According to sources the officer, 38-year-old Jason Crisp, was killed during an exchange of gunfire.
Thirty-eight-year-old Troy David Whisnant, who police were searching for, was shot and killed a short time later by officers.
The incident began when a man and woman, later identified as Rhonda and Levi Whisnant, were found dead in a home along the 5500 block of Fish Hatchery Road.
Officials said that Troy Whisnant was believed to be involved in a hit and run Wednesday morning on Highway 18 in the Oak Hill area, and that he had stolen a wrecker and crashed it on Table Rock Road.
When deputies went to Whisnant's home they found his parents, Rhonda and Levi Whisnant, dead inside. There was also evidence of a struggle, and a missing vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials also said that friends had not heard from the couple since Friday, and they contacted the sheriff's office just before 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigator's then said they were searching for Whisnant in connection to the deaths.
During the search, officials said an exchange of gunfire took place. Officer Jason Crisp, and his K9 Officer, Maros, were both killed.
Then, later Wednesday, sources told WBTV that Whisnant was dead after being shot by officers.
Records show Whisnant has a lengthy criminal history, including charges of manslaughter in 1996.
Officer Crisp leaves behind a wife and two children. A Facebook page titled "Remembering Officer Jason Crisp & K9 Maros USFS EOW 3/12/14" was posted in his memory. You can visit it here.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.
