[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9XJH8tl4Rk]'Just Checking': Cheerios' New Commercial [HD] - YouTube[/ame]

Cheerios Commercial Featuring Mixed Race Family Gets Racist Backlash (VIDEO)

Description of video - "In the ad, she is seeking nutritional advice from her white mother and black father. The spot ends with her pouring a bunch of Cheerios on the chest of her sleeping father — believing it will make his heart healthier."

An adorable Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple and their daughter generated such a strong racist backlash on YouTube that the comments section had to be closed.

The ad had received more than 1,600 likes and more than 500 dislikes as of Thursday evening.

Prior to the closure, the comment section had been filled "with references to Nazis, 'troglodytes' and 'racial genocide,'" according to Adweek.

YouTube comment sections have a reputation for breeding racist flame wars. CNN focused on the issue earlier this year, after a panel addressing racism and race on YouTube was held at South By Southwest:
"Everyone gets hate comments on YouTube," said Andre Meadows, the creator of the Black Nerd Comedy channel. "You can make the most wonderful video in the world and you will get 'Fake!' and 'Gay!'"

But for minority creators, "when you get comments, it seems to be targeted toward race almost immediately. A lot of people get 'dumb video, stupid video' -- but with mine it immediately goes to racial slurs."

Commenters on the cereal's Facebook page also said they found the commercial "disgusting" and that it made them "want to vomit." Other hateful commenters expressed shock that a black father would stay with his family.

However, many took to Facebook to express their appreciation for Cheerios' decision to feature a mixed-race family.

"Having been mixed in the '70s, I'd like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like," Beschelle Lockhart posted Monday.

"Just watched your commercial with the biracial family. Beautiful. Thank you so much," Alexandra Burt wrote.

Cheerios was unfazed by the racist Internet backlash. "Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all," Camille Gibson, Cheerios vice president of marketing, told Gawker.

what's wrong with these people? bunch of racist sadistic folks :ugh:

I wonder how many real racists made comments and how many where just trolls trying to get reactions.

Too many!! sad. I live here in syracuse ny, there are so many white peeps but i do see the diverse people moving here everyday. I am looking forward to it. My hometown, is sort of diverse people more and more.

I saw the commercial on tv, and thought it was great. I am pretty surprised to hear people still think that way.

Same here, Botti...just saw that commercial 10 minutes ago while watching The Doctors....thought it was sweet....

I bet that GM company is very thankful for those comment. More business for them :).

I am not surprise at all . I had a friend who was a Blues singer he was Black and his wife is White . They where in New Hampshire about 10 years ago and when out to eat and where refuses service . And that is not that long ago.
There will always be racist people . Look what happen after Obama won the election the first time , a Black church was burned down.

Cherrios is my favorite cereal after seeing this video, I don't see how they view this as racist or offensive? Sounds like those 'trolls' or racist people who have a hate for interracial family. Some people are sick in the head :(

Probably just trolls. Hard to tell without seeing the comments and comment history. I'm not going to rely on HuffPo for accuracy.

If the posts were real that is sad.

I thought it was adorable...I can't understand people, this upsets viewers?

It is always so disappointing to see view like these. You'd think we'd have moved farther than this don't you?

There was a lot of backlash when the Hunger Games movie came out. People we irrate!! I read a lot of Tweets (I don't have twitter they were links on a forum) So many people were upset that a black girl was cast as Rue, I don't know how they missed that tidbit in the books, they're just dumb I guess. But you should have read some of them, they were like I cried when Rue died, if I had known she was black I wouldn't have been so upset.

WTF is that? I really don't understand people, I really don't. It is so shocking though. I never actually hear people saying anything like that in person (unless they're 50 plus) not even here in the south. SO when I see reactions like this it is jarring, and terribly disappointing.

Still no comments or comment history.

There's not going to be the nasty comments in the comments for the article, you'd find the comments on the original video. But considering if you do a google search you will find that pretty much every single news outlet has done an article on it, I don't think it's make believe hype by Cheerios for attention to the commercial.

Racism sadly does still exist AND people get brave on the internet and spout stuff they never would say to people in person.
