4g
Yep I am not a technolgoy whiz!
I am curious if I turn 4G off in order to keep my cell phone bettery life longer? Is 4G necessary to use it for my pager? I read somewhere on line that somoene turned 4g off to keep battery life longer. I have no clue what 4G is. So hope some of you will be able to explain, probably waste your time if i still don't grasp of it. ![]() Thank you! |

Frisky Feline,
Wifi, 4G, GPS and bluetooth will shorten the battery life. If you want to extend the battery life, try to switch it to 2G (edge) with some kind of application that can switch between 2g, 3g and 4g on the fly. What kind of phone do you use? bluetooth is technically a wireless USB interface. It can connect to wireless headphones, printers, keyboards, etc. Dimming the screen will help extend the battery life as well. The screen is one of the features that will drain the battery a lot. |

wifi is basically a wireless hot spot in one location like a coffee shop or at home with your own wireless router. |

4G might be useful for games if you plan to play or download stuff only? It has nothing to do with email or message but only you want to make it faster but slow or fast and still receives anyway right? WIFI is something i have trouble grasping but i guess I leave WIFI on? |

Oh, you mean I need to look up into the application to search for "advanced task manager or juice defender" to decide on which is better in order to make battery life longer? forgive me for being me like that but i like to see all of your comments and review on the onlines and plan to ask the sprint store. But hey the sprint store people may not know much. This is why I like to collect everything to make sense to me. |

Here's a simple overview of the various things and how they're used:
GPS: Global Positioning System. If this is on, you can use apps like Google Maps as a navigation system for your phone and it'll show you where you currently are. Many other apps will also use this to provide more applicable information. (For example, Foursquare will use your GPS to show you which locations are near you.) Some people express concerns that this may allow people and the government to track you, but they can already do that with triangulation of cellular networks. Wi-Fi: Used to connect to the internet over a wireless network (such as at work, at home, at Starbucks). This gives your phone faster download speeds and tends to use somewhat less battery power than utilizing the phone connection for internet downloads and the like. Turning this off when you're not using it will save a little bit of battery power. Bluetooth: Short-range wireless pairing between devices. This is most often used on phones with wireless headsets and headphones. You can also use this to connect to your computer, but connecting via a USB cable is both faster and uses less power. If you're not using any of these devices, then you definitely want to turn this off, as leaving it on is a large power drain. 4G: This is the "fourth generation" cellular network. Basically, when you're out and access anything on the internet, this makes your phone's connection almost as fast as your broadband connection at home. This uses more power than 3G and Wifi, but if you have access to a 4G network in your city, the speed increase will almost certainly be noticeable. If you remember to turn it on and off when you're using it, you can increase the battery life by turning it off when you're not using the internet on your phone. Keep in mind that any applications which receive notifications from the web (such as if you using Google Voice for texting) will be using this, so turning this off and using 2G or 3G may result in slower notifications than you're used to if you're not normally turning it off. 3G: The "third generation" cellular network. Basically the same stuff as above applies. To the best of my knowledge (I might be wrong) you only using either 4G or 3G or 2G, but none at the same time. If you're using internet, you probably always want to be using 4G as long as you have it. 2G: The default or normal cellular network. This is what most cell phones default to for simple tasks like placing calls and receiving direct texts (ie not via an app like Google Voice). You don't need to mess with this at all, just including so you knew what I was talking about with the other stuff, lol. |

I really appreciate your time, stsapphire. It makes sense to me. I can turn 4g off or on whenever it is necessary for me. I have no problem locating my 4g that it is right there to turn it off or on at anytime. for now, I will leave 4G on. I only will turn 4g off when i go out with girlfriends. Needless to say, I did turn the bluetooth off so i ll turn it on if i plan to use phones with wireless headsets and headphones whatever. It's getting better for me now.
Thank you. |

good posts everyone- looks like I am very late in the game to add my comments. But I will add my 2 cents-. bluetooth is only good if you want to add gizmos like hands free ear/mouth piece, connect to local printers to print, or use to send data to another mobile device. For the most of us deafies/hoh we don't use it. It is a huge power drain feature to use. same with GPS, but I use the GPS feature alot. I use it to check in, use it for blip tracking, navigation if I forget my tomtom unit.
can't explain anything better then StSapphire on 4g... If your issue is the battery life and don't mind having a bulkier unit, have you thought about replacing your andriod regular battery to Seidio Innocell 2600mAh Extended Battery? I replaced my blackberry to the simalar battery from same company and I went from 1 day to 2.5 days on a single charge on light use. The vibrator feature really eats the battery so just chatting drains the battery but I have no choice. |

Thanks radioman, I d like to keep GPS on like you mentioned. I only turned bluetooth off. I left 4G, GPS and WIFI on.
I will worry about the battery life to replace it or not. I don't travel that much. I usually work or home or friends home. SO i tend to recharge them right there. Thanks!! |

I was like, "huh already?" now I see what you have the same experience. Yea it's a good idea to bring extra bettery.

Agreed with ya. I never turn my iPhone's WIFI off. It got 2-3 days battery life with 3G and WIFI enable.

You can use GPS only if you need directions to that location or find closest businesses in the area which is useful. You might want to use wifi if you want to share large files over the phone like bunch of pictures or videos, etc. You still can get messages on 4g network just fine. I have mine to sync emails. It won't hurt to experiment. |

One time my wife car broke down and she said she is on that road but doesnt know where on that road. I can just blip her and know how close or far I am. Very useful. On the other hand, if you got kids who drive and need to make sure they are not straying off from a said path to a location....
