I'm not sure what he meant by that. It would be irresponsible to leave the laptop running 24/7 though. I can tell you that laptop battery requires a recalibration every once in a while. Once a month is what they recommend.

You can't really leave a laptop on for weeks at a time unless it's plugged in. Not using the battery for weeks isn't recommended by many. The battery itself need to be used at least a few times a week to keep the electrons moving around.

The batteries are supposed to last you for years if used properly. However, a lot of people don't, which is why you see a lot of batteries being replaced within the first couple years.

correct keeping the laptops cool can be a task in itself!
once a week it helps to use canned air and blow the dust out of the cpu cooling fan and fins.( if you are in a very dusty area) otherwise once a month is fine.

also check your battery frequently for signs of bulging, excessive heat and leakage.
If your battery does not hold a charge for the correct time length, or your computer requests frequent battery calibration it may be failing!
if a battery leaks any fluid clean it up immediately!
the fumes from the battery are very caustic and will ruin the motherboard
if you notice a sharp odor it may be too late.

( I have seen far too many brought into my shop with battery fluid damage)

Most laptops are good for 6-9 hours per day. Some people never turned laptop off for long time that cause overheat will damage on chipset, GPU, HDD, and CPU. Some of laptop can ruined the battery life.

Believe or not, my macbook's battery life almost 3 years old and I still have 93% of current battery capacity. My battery up to 1,000 cycle life. Most PC's battery is pretty short life as 2 years or less OR battery's cycle life up to 400-500.

Yes, I am pretty heavy travel for job, student, etc and I am not big fan to carry power supply with me all times. Good thing my macbook's battery life is 5 hours.

Desktop have no problem with power on for 24/7 but laptop nope.

Or you can use sleep mode and it wont harm your hardware at all. I almost never shut my macbook down for long time. 90% of time I use sleep mode (simple close my laptop lid) I like sleep mode over shut down/boot up since it wake up from sleep mode under 1-2 seconds which perfect for job and student without waiting for boot up around 40-60 seconds.

I noticed some laptops with Windows XP have issue with sleep mode. That's why made people gave up sleep mode and end up stay power on or shut down in old way.

Windows 7 is solved a problem for sleep mode.

The Apple Macbooks are based on Asus parts, etc. So, that's why they are reliable in general. Asus laptops are good as the Toshiba too.

if you never carried your laptop around... who cares? lol that's how my laptops are. simply configure your power setting to make your HDD go into sleep mode or whatever after x-minutes of inactivity.

I thought Apple use foxconn's part for iPod, desktop, and laptop.

Never had more than a laptop, a desktop, a cellphone/smartphone and a console.

Had an MP3 player; thought about replacing it, but I had issues with the police not believing I can't hear them.

Right, Laptop or small computer don't really matter to us.

Most laptops and small computers are around 35-80watts

Most desktops are around 200-400 watts.

Yeah, my Mac Mini is 110w and the monitor is 30 watts something. As long it gets sufficent cooling and the fans aren't spinning too fast, it will last for a long time.

Near the future, I will get a Macbook Pro laptop. Either 13" or 15.4"

I still own Acer and Dell with Windows XP netbooks. I wish I should not bought a Dell netbook.

Great! I love 13" MacBook Pro. its is lighter weigh and long battery hour than PC notebook. Enough size that could read clearly. My Old PC notebooks are too heavy and short battery hours. I hope you buy Macbook Pro. I may buy 2nd iPad which includes front-facing cam and retina display next year.

HI there,

I have Sony Vaio, it's been since 2002;

2003: Sony Repaired on my lappy; Cleaned, replaced a fan and coolant fins.
2004: Same thing again.
2005: Hitachi Hard drive dead, and bought new Toshiba Hard Drive and installed new Ubuntu Linux.
2009: Battery dead and pulled out. Lappy still good with AC powered on and running fine.

Right now it's still alive.. You know the toshiba hard drive still good but my local puter shop doesn't sell toshiba hard drive anymore.

Hey there guys,
Many thanks for your experiences and opinions. I have learned a thing or two about what I should get in a computer.

Apple computer sounds nice but it's more expensive like $1500 to $2500 down here.

So I'll keep an eye out for an reasonable priced Toshiba laptop. Will let you know how it went once I manage to buy it.

I've just bought a Samsung P580-JS01 because it's the only one I can find without a stupid glossy screen. I like to have the windows open in the summer and a glossy screen turns into a mirror in anything but dim light. It has good specs and built-in camera for video chats. :-)

I'm considering Toshiba, Sony Vaio or Dell.

Not sure how many Ram or memory on Hard Drive I should look for.

Is 2.26GHz any good?

I should get a laptop with webcam, bluetooth or wireless component, no?

What on the earth is Optical drive?

Which brands of computer do you like the best and why?

in advance

Acer laptops and netbooks are also worth considering but as a professional, I preffer Asus Netbooks are cheaper but, sometimes its all that a person needs. They are lighter and smaller and can fit in some pocket books. They come with webcams, bluetooth and wireless network.

Memory size and hard drive size really depend on what your going to use it for, too much is over kill and a waste of money. 2gb should be the minimum, 4gb recommended, if you will be doing video editing or picture editing then you should consider more, memory is cheap nowadays.

Harddrive size also depends on what your going to use it for. If it's used for everyday browsing and document editing then 160gb drive is okay. For video and picture editing-minumum should be 500gb, I recommend at least 300GB.

2.26 ghz is around what you would get for a netbook, for a notebook I would try a minimum of 2.66 ghz.
An optical drive is a CD, DVD, or Blueray player. The reason the call it an optical drive is because there are som many varieties to choose from. If you can afford it, i would choose a blueray player and burner. If not, just a blueray player will be fine (it will play CDs and DVDs as well).

Keep in mind the more hardrive, memory, and accesseories, the shorter the battery life will be. Battery life should be at least 90 minutes for a 6 cell battery and 2.5 to 3 hours for a 12 cell battery (try and get one with a 12 cell bettery ) Don't go expensive because the average life of a laptop is 3 years, and they become outdated in 1.5 years or less.

I also use Tigerdirect.com for my purchases, they have been great for me so far.

Good luck and happy shopping
