I don't know how to secure my wireless router..I don't want anyone else but people who are in my house to be able to use it (password protect it) but it didnt really come with instructions on how to do that (the ppl at best buy wanted 145 to come and secure it and i said pfft no way) (maybe i should of):ty: anyone know how to do it? I have a linksys wireless g router and its 2.4 ghz if that helps? thanks!

There are several things you need to do, I can't give you a step by step for everything but if you search google you'll be able to find lots of documentation.

You're smart to tell best buy to go "pfft" themselves ;)
It's very easy to secure your connection.

1) change the default password. (the password I'm referring to is the one you type in when you connect to the router (usually by going to 192.168.1.1))

2) Use MAC address filtering.

That's about all you need to prevent 99.9% of people from accessing your wireless network.

Other things you can do are:

3) Turn off SSID broadcast, this will prevent your access point from showing up when people search for wireless networks on their computer. (dosn't make it 100% invisible but non-hacker types won't know it's there)

4) enable encryption. -- Some times this is all that people do, by enabling encryption you need to have a "key" to access the network, the key is also used to scramble the information which keeps others from snooping on what you are doing online. -- It can be a real pain in the butt, and if you do the other steps I've listed, then the only benifit of using encryption is scrambling the data, it's a good thing, but not that important. (I have encryption turned off on my router because I have a wireless print server that is a pain in the butt to set up, and just works better with no encryption.)

Hope this helps.

MAC ID filter is easy to fool! It is not fool proof! and it can be spoofing!

Average hacker DO know how to fool router with fake MAC ID. Sorry to break that.

I agree with you, but the vast majority of people don't even know what a MAC address is, let alone how to spoof one to get into an access point. A hacker can find the SSID even if it's not broadcast, and if a good key isn't used then the encryption can be easily cracked.

No matter what we suggest, there's potential for a knowledgeable person to get in.

Right, and what is best and fool-proof method should we suggest? I got excellent one!

Throw out these wireless gadgets and you'd be safe! Then that is 100% fool-proof!

Then, I should get a very long wire for my cell phone? :giggle:

you better stop encourage them to use caveman tool.

Supposed a SICKO found your place with unsecured wireless internet...

they decided to upload and download illegal stuff, god forbidden child pornography though your wireless network, and FBI may be all over you and accused you for trafficking of illegal activities, you would then have to pay decent attorney to defend yourself, is it WORTH THE HASSLES?

That is part of reason why I dislike wireless, no trace, nothing to leave trail to prove your innocence.

I'm aware of what happen, because the newie doesn't tell how to set security that well.

There are lately wireless router come with easy instruction to set the security. And I start to notice more wireless around in my home and I test to check if wireless is security or not. Most are security proof.

That prove thing have improve. Move on, come join the future. we can rule the galaxy. bvwhahahahaaaaaa

I wish you lots of luck!

Not true, most people are just new to wireless and doesn't know about setup the wireless, if they got in trouble with FBI then they will be excused due innocent and ask to them to setup the security on wireless, even alot of network technician can do it.

It does happened to one co-worker at my store and he was in trouble with FBI at once but he was excused because he does nothing with wireless, there's no charge on them, though.

FBI is already know about most wireless are not secured, not new one.

Linksys offers easier step to set on wireless with security.

Yup, Linksys is one of them.

I love Linksys...

That is not my point, my point is why risk going though the trouble and paying thousands of dollars to attorney to defend yourself and if they found out your innocent, you STILL have to pay the Attorney fees! I don't want that! Plus spending time in jail for time being, can lead to job losses... fook that!

No, They don't need attorney.

FBI and them would have discuss about what happen, then they will be excuse from charge on internet crime, hackers aren't win to own us.

FBI already know that, I'm seriously...

That's WHAT I know from my co-worker that got in trouble but he was excuse, he don't get attorney, though.

We are getting off-topic, I'm tired of stupid BS on wireless or network.

Lil need help to secure on her wireless router, this thread isn't debate about between wireless and wired then enough with that.

I agree with PowerON that need stop to discuss about hack or bad thing about wireless.

I had use on wireless for 5 years, no problem.

Yup, just better to use weird or different words on SSID, that tough word to guess then hackers wouldn't know about it and disable on broadcast too.

Lil, Do you have installation CD? that's easier to settle it, if you don't have one then just download from linksys.com and burn on CD.
