This is a question posed by a fellow iMac user. Can you help her?

Does anyone know why my iMAC might be switching to symbols instead of letters? It did it twice before but switched back. I thought maybe my cat was walking on the keyboard and hitting some magic combination but
for the life of me I cannot figure how to get out of the symbols and
this third time it switched over it isn't going back to alphabet
letters. I am using WORD and system 10.

Part II

Thanks to the people who have responded. I need to add that it is not a matter of changing fonts. I know how to do all that. The problem is
that it doesn't matter what font I am in, everything prints in symbols.
I am wondering if my iMAC is fixing to bite the bullet!

hold "option" and press any key to play around to get familiar with symbol as it doesn't appear on keyboard but on screen.

second.. umm... *shurg* no idea. :D

Thanks guys. I'll pass on your suggestions.

Nope, didn't work. :( Friend still has the "symbols" problem. Oh, well.

I am thinking:

(1) Click System Preference icon bottom screen

(2) Click "International"

(3) Select "English" and select "Standard" (Word Break)

For "Input Menu" - I am not sure about this one. She could try it.

For "Keyboard Shortcuts" - She might needs to click "Restore Defaults."

I have a feeling that this one that she has been looking for:

(1) Click "Application" folder

(2) Find and click "Font Book"

(3) She can figure this out.

Thanks. I'll forward this to her.

I asked her if she used the on-line support but she didn't reply. :dunno:

I think she's discouraged and wants a new computer.

Maybe she wants that new iMac. :P
