North America gets two SKUs again, one with pack-in game.
by Jeremy Dunham

July 9, 2007 - Rumor has become truth this morning, as Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that it will slashing the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 model, while also introducing a new 80GB model in the US and Canada.

The 60GB version, previously priced at $599 US ($659 CND), has been lowered to $499 US ($549 CND) starting immediately. The 80GB SKU, already available in Korea, will ship on our side of the pond with MotorStorm packed in.

Sony also confirmed that it plans on shipping more than 120 new first and third-party games in North America throughout the holidays and fiscal year.

"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA. "The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."

Technologically, the 60GB and 80GB PlayStation 3s will be identical other than hard drive space. The 20GB model, has been discontinued in the US, as was reported earlier this year.

Cool. But I don't really understand what 60 or 80GB is really used for. To store music or video? What do gamers generally use those space for?

Most of it will be for downloadable contents. Not just that, you can put movies, pictures, music and more onto it if you want to.

Oh I see...I just need the system to play games not to download stuff which I could have done on my computer, lol. I guess it's cool though. Glad I waited...but it will still be a while before I get my own PS3. For now PS2 and Wii is enough for me.

Actually, you will need the hard drive in order to save games.

Eh? Then this would be helpful. lol

PS3 can use memory stick right? To download the pictures to a hard drive.

WTF with MS? they are laughing at PS3 price drop.

MS isn't smart with math, though...

With anything as new and groundbreaking as this, NEVER buy it when it first comes out. If you can wait a year or two, not only is it cheaper and more games are available, but any bugs that the first few rounds had are worked out!

I would wager it is because M$ thinks the price drop won't really help the PS3 in terms of sales. Personally, I think the PS3 needs another $100 drop to really be competitive. I also predict another price drop when this $500 price tag doesn't really pan out for Sony...

Ok, If Xbox 360 on Elite package, that's almost similar to PS3 except for different spaces of HDD and different HDMI since Xbox 360 is 1.2 and PS3 is 1.3. If you want HD-DVD add-on, wireless adapter or other stuff then would cost about $780 and PS3 would be still $500 except for need purchase HDMI cable, around from $10 or up.

For Xbox 360 premium package then would cost $880 for network adapter, HD-DVD add-on and 120GB HDD then MS don't know about math but some gamers are smart so enough. I can get 160GB HDD for $80 from online.

Remember, MS lost $4 billion on original xbox but they looked for cheap stuff on Xbox 360 to make more profit but original xbox can be more expensive than Xbox 360 due inflation or something. It does same with Sony but not for long time but Nintendo is one that made much profit over Sony and MS because of Wii and DS.

I know. I'm expecting a price drop on all 360 models, but not too soon, more like around the time or after Halo 3/GTA4 comes out.

Glad that Sony made the decision to drop the prices and add better features on the base model. :)

They aren't really adding any new features. Actually, they're removing the emotion chip used to play PS2 games. They are going to use an emulation software for it now. The other only change is a bigger hard drive which you can already upgrade to start with.
