Nearly one in every three Xbox 360 consoles fail, according to retailer reports

By several metrics, the Xbox 360 is the most successful console so far of this generation. Despite the startling pace of the Wii, the Xbox 360 still has the most consoles sold worldwide and the longest list of games and exclusives. For a gamer looking for online-enabled high-definition gaming today, the Xbox 360 appears to satisfy those needs.

One often overlooked factor when considering a console purchase is reliability, an area that is becoming apparent where the Xbox 360 falls short. Anecdotal evidence is heavily pointing to Microsoft’s latest console as being significantly more prone to failure than what consumers are accustomed to.

Microsoft has said before that its Xbox 360 failure rate falls within three to five percent, what it believes to be well within industry standards. Internet reports from Xbox 360 owners, however, suggest that the failure rate is much higher than that.

I think the irresponsible owners aren't the problem this time. In a normal situation, it's often the consumer's fault for not taking care of their properties. I believe it's a major flaw in the design of the motherboard (mainboard).

So when the system gets too hot, the combination of loosened solder with a mainboard that flexes from heat causes the GPU or CPU to actually break its connection from the board - resulting in the 3 red lights and secondary error code 0102 (the “unknown hardware error” code).

This is a growing problem and it is even happening with the new Elite model.

What I don't appreciate is how Microsoft keeps denying that such a problem exists. Especially when some repair services are now refusing to accept any more Xbox 360 units. Microsoft is perfectly aware of the problem and it is building up over time. It's obvious there is a problem when there's an article out there about a man who had to replace his Xbox 360 11 times. Click here for the story.

This will turn really ugly if Microsoft continues to deny it.

I advocate for consumer's rights. It irks the crap out of me when a corporation pulls this kind of stunt and then tries to pull wool over our eyes. Microsoft has a long history of misleading their customers and this is nothing new.

It's no surprised that other XBOX peeps on AllDeaf haven't ranted or defied your post, Banjo!

Looks like you won this round! Cheers!

I KNOW the feeling about the 360's failure rate. I went through 2 360's with the DVD drive troubles. Lucky for me I took out a xtended warranty on the 2nd 360 as insurance. So with the 2nd broken 360, I decided I had enough of M$'s shit with the hardware problems so back to Sony I went.

I only ran the 3rd replacement 360 for an hour in order to clean out my HDD of all old game saves and extra crap before I traded it in the next day for my PS3.

Since then my PS3 has been so reliable like clockwork and I dont miss playing the 360 nowadays. I'm really looking forward to playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma this week on my PS3 and not have to worry about the PS3 choking on it. :)

I find that strange that my original xbox was so anvil tough and would take anything I could throw at it without a hiccup yet they didnt make the 360's quality much better than the original did. If M$ practiced BETTER engineering alongside STRICT quality control with the 360, there wouldnt be so much problems, but M$ really dropped the ball big time on that one.

M$ will just keep stonewalling and denying until the chickens come home to roost.....

Oh yup, I'm not surprised...

I got Xbox 360 since Dec 2006 and never got problem but can be happen in anytime, also if happen in after 1 year, right after warrenty is expire then I would be real piss at MS off and ask them to expands my warrenty.

MS had discontinued Xbox in early 2005 due absent of GPU because GPU companies were ceased all GPU out for Xbox then MS is rush to made Xbox 360 so quickly as Peter want be head start too since he's former president of Sega but he's sucks too much. Without Peter's idea then Xbox 360 can be release in 2006, along with PS3 and Wii and probably get small issue, not worse as before.

I'm really like Bill Gates's idea about Xbox but Peter sucks!!!

No, I doubt that...

I have nothing to against on MS but I like original xbox so better than Xbox 360.

I'm only dislike Peter Moore.

Speaking of devil....

Isnt Peter Moore was president of SEGA during Dreamcast era before hired by Microsoft? He is a curse...

Are Xbox 360s' cases made of metals instead of plastic? I noticed Microsoft designed Xbox 360 motherboard based on desktop computer motherboard, not electronic motherboard like Wiis and PS3s.

I have no problems with my Wii since Dec. It was overheated few times, yet it work fine after unplug the power cord before I moved it away from television.

Xbox 360 failures, Microsoft's careless services, and no improved hardware upgrades are main reasons I dont buy Xbox 360s. Look like I can wait for few years until Xbox360s became stability... or not! :squint:

Yup, Peter is used to be president of Sega, during on Dreamcast era.

I'm planning to get Wii in late 2007 or 2008 when limited supply is ended.

I've been fortunate to have my 360 running since November of '06. I do have the feeling that it's going to break down any day though. I do take care of the box, make sure it is on a flat surface, the room is well ventilated, etc. I may jump ship to the PS3 if my box dies, and wait till M$ improves the desgin of the 360 before I buy another.

or just reduce of playing time then wouldn't cause overheat in anytime.

This is interesting, Peter Moore has issued an open letter to the community regarding all this, and announcing a extended warranty for the 360. Pretty convenient, eh Banjo? His letter can be found at XBOX.com.

According on link...
"What you have to ask yourself as an investor is, should Microsoft be in the hardware business?" said Kim Caughey, senior analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group, which oversees about $1.2 billion, including Microsoft shares, for clients.

I hope that MS wouldn't discontinue to sell Xbox 360, if it does happen then would be huge affect to gaming world and more hardcore gamers are goes back to Sony (PS3) or become PC gamers in anytime since it does happen in some gamers that got PS3 or Wii and got away from Xbox 360.

Microsoft extended 3 years warranty. I think it is going to be good for them to keep up with their customers to stay with Xbox.

I like Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii. Also I liked PC too. I aint fan boy!

Xbox 360, i like most is games and achievements, mostly on sports games.

PS3, I like blu-ray movies and some games like Motorstorm.

Wii, I like family games with my kids. My kids asked me to play so I played with them. I see them smiling and happy to beat me. I enjoyed that.

Ok, I'm not fanboy, though.

You aren't match to my post about if MS want to abandon the hardware business since I don't support if happen but expands to 3 years, that where MS sent over $1 billion.

According to this article, Microsoft has admitted that every single Xbox 360 (Core, Premium and Elite) are all defective. Like I said before, there is a design flaw which can cause a system failure.

Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.

Microsoft facing US$1.15bn Xbox 360 repair bill - Consumer Electronics - www.crn.com.au

Even though they said it "could" cause the device to fail. The truth is, it will fail... eventually. All of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 units shipped in the last 19 months are going to fail, no matter what. Even if your Xbox 360 is still running, it will fail someday from the design flaw.

Quite unacceptable.

At least they extended the warranty to three years and are offering free repairs and shipping in order to avoid a major class lawsuit. This is going to end up costing them a least a billion dollar. This is probably why you haven't seen a price cut.

And this may be one of the causes for Peter Moore to resgin. I have read that he was in fact fired, but he chose to 'resgin' to save face.

Wow, I'm SURPRISED!!! :eek3:

Now, he's president of EA Sports but I would wonders if he will not port Madden or EA sport games on PS3, also that's good because I bought All-Pro Football 2K8.

Bow to 2k!!!

I can smell that Sony is pulling MS in their home and tell that PS3 is fuckin sweet.

Mine Elite frozen three times when I play Forza Motorsports 2. As some of you prolly knew that I owned Orginal white 360 system and had it replaced for the 3rd times and fed up and sold it. With the Elite it's much better than all my 3 prevoious white 360s. But still just freeze when I played it for over 3 hours. Hopefully in the future it doesnt break down. My PS3 show no signs of problem... but I had my 1st PS3 returned and got it replaced because I thought my PS3 had problems then the replace one had same results and I got Elite and seeing the same results and realized that my HDTV HDMI card is the one has problems so I use Componment cables for Elite. and Still use HDMI for PS3. My PS3 is great and no freeze and all stuff like this. One of the guy said to avoid it overheating is to make sure your room temp is cool and keep away from anything blocking the vents. I personally think PS3 gonna up in the near future.
