I just came indoors and saw my laptop screen showed the background picture but no toolbar or anything else on the screen. That is NOT the way I left it a little while ago.

I clicked the mouse and the touch pad. No response. I clicked the Windows key. Nothing. I clicked the short cut button for email. Nothing. Suddenly, the "hibernate" msg popped up. Then the computer started vibrating and making a loud whirring noise. It's like my hard drive was spinning out of control! I unplugged everything, and carefully lifted it, and poked the reset button with the tip of my pen. That stopped it. But I'm afraid to start it up again, or even plug in the power.

I'm terrified that's it fried some how.

Any suggestions? I'm desperate!

Hibernate mode is when everything shuts down... to save energy.

Normally, the disc drive and everything keeps running while the computer is being used. To conserve power, there's a setting in the computer that allows the computer to hibernate when not in use for a specific amount of time.

When you come out of hibernation, everything starts up at the same time. That's probably the case... and shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Think of it this way...

You have a power strip with 6 things plugged into it: fan, hair dryer, iron, light, and television. You normally turn each item on and off on your own time. However, you have all of them on and decide to turn them all off by using the power strip instead of turning them all of individually. Later, you turn that one switch back on. Now, all are starting at the same time... which is overwhelming on the power strip sometimes... but still harmless. Get the idea?

Yes, I've experienced hibernate mode before but never this way, with all the vibration and grinding noise. Also, normally when my computers hibernate, they just wake up when I roll the mouse, or touch a key.

I have to leave for a while. When I come home, I'll check back.

Thanks. :)

Did you press buttons frantically to check email and other stuff, and accidentally hit the hibernate button? Even if you shut the thing off like that, depending on what your computer is capable of... it can just fix itself after you turn it back on. Something like that wouldn't worry me, normally. Plug it back in, turn it on and resist the urge to press buttons randomly. Take a coffee break instead. Let the bootup do its job, and the pc should be okay. I've had to reset the pc like that before, when it "froze" and made that grinding vibration.

You probably should consult with your regular tech support through your computer's model warranty, though.

OUCH ! it might be something related to lazy fans or harddrive.

i hope u have a backup before anything can happens. i always preach my wife to backup her files for her sake business. :)

Ugh... I hate hibernate mode, it make sign out from AIM, MSN and disconnect the router for computer, that fucking annoying and it does fucked it up after click it.

Reba, If you don't want to have hibernate on your computer then click right mouse and click tab "Screen Saver" then click "Power..." and fix it yourself then you are done.

No. I went outside, and when I came back in, there it was. I didn't touch it until after.

OK. BTW, it's my laptop, not my PC. I'm using my PC right now. :)

I do back up. :) I don't keep any files on my laptop. I keep all my files on the PC, and back them up on flash drive and external hard drive. When I need files from the PC for the laptop, I connect thru the network. I keep bare bones on the laptop.

I was kind of surprised that it was in hibernate today. Normally it only does that if I'm running on the battery, and the battery gets low. I very rarely use it on battery. Today, it was plugged in, not on battery power.

So, should I dare and plug it in and turn it on again? Gulp!

Really? I don't know that you are using laptop, my bad.

The hibernate mode is good for laptop to save alot of battery.

Well, I tried. My laptop power came on, it made a grinding noise, the screen was black, and the words "operating system not found" popped up. :(

Sounds like SNAFU (remmy that one ;) ). Time for it to go in the shop. Hope it's not too $eriou$.

Sounds like the blue face of death, Reba; so sorry. Maybe the shop can take out the hard drive and rescue it's contents, no?
