Sony shares plunge on PlayStation 3 concerns
TOKYO (AP) - Fresh concerns about the upcoming release of Sony's much-anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console and reports of erratic performance dragged Sony shares down 2.75 percent Tuesday.

Technical problems for the PlayStation 3 would be the latest embarrassment for Sony, which has already had to twice delay the product's launch, and is facing stepped up competition from rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

Sony has also been hit by the recent string of recalls for its lithium ion batteries for laptop computers.

PlayStation 3 units on display at the Tokyo Game Show about 10 days ago operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset, according to a report released Monday by Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson in Tokyo.

``While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue,'' Gibson wrote. ``We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company.''

Sony denied that there was any technical problem with the PlayStation 3.

Earlier in the day, investment firm Goldman Sachs Group Inc. lowered Sony's stock rating to ``neutral'' from ``buy,'' citing confusion over the release of PlayStation 3 and concerns that disappointing sales of PlayStation Portable may weigh on its earnings in electronics operations more heavily than expected.

Sony's stock tumbled 130 yen ($1.11), or 2.75 percent, to 4,600 yen ($38.98) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The PlayStation 3 will hit stores in Japan on Nov. 11 and in the United States on Nov. 17. In Europe, they won't go on sale until March, four months later than planned.

Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato said any problems at the Tokyo Game Show, where Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo showed off rival offerings under the same roof, were likely caused by one-of-a-kind temperature irregularities.

About 200 PlayStation 3 units were clustered together in close proximity and housed in kiosks that concentrated the heat generated by their processors and provided poor ventilation, Kato said. Overheating under such circumstances is a common affliction at trade shows, afflicting not just Sony products but those of its competitors, she said.

``It's not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself,'' Kato said. ``For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem.''

Sony is sticking to its plans to ship 2 million PlayStation 3 units by year's end and 6 million by March 31, 2007, she said.

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. rushed its next-generation Xbox 360 to Japanese markets last year to get a head start on its rivals, but it has seen sluggish sales in Japan, which is one of the world's biggest video game markets but one in which players have a deep loyalty to homegrown Sony.

Nintendo Co. meanwhile is planning to launch its new Wii game console in the final quarter of the year and price it below both rivals, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Enjoying watching people beat balls/pucks with sticks, beat each other with sticks, beat each other, and throw balls through hoops since forever.

Honestly, I can careless about techical problem for 3 next-gen gaming console.

I'm sure you wouldn't be saying that if you got a defective PS3.

I've been reading quite a bit about the cell technology used in PS3 and how unreliable they've been so far in testing modes. This is basically why PS3 took so long before being revealed to the public. Apparently they are still having problems.

Heck, some developers has been saying that it's incredibly difficult to develop for.

Did you remember about I got overheating from 360 then sold out at EBgames for other credits to order other games. I have issues with network adapter and leave it for about 6 hours then went overheated and just like WTF at 360. I don't think about would get issues with PS3 unless for reduce of play time and PS3 isn't release until Nov 17 but after released then we will check out and review about issues on PS3, same with Wii.

You said about game developers have difficult to develop the new games but I don't think so and depends on game developers would start develop the new games like Sega. Sega don't have difficult time to develop the new games and other some game developers.

Google it up.

:werd: I've exactly read the same thing in october's EGM with Activison having some difficulties creating the Call of Duty 3 version for the PS3 than with the Wii version since it uses DVD-ROM and the Wii is much like a supercharged gamecube.

Google it up.

Again, I said depends on game developers, that what steel stated above about Activison.

I'm not going to start debate with game developers or formant issues, that not my problem.

Um, I'm just telling you what I read.

Wait a min... You means cell processor?

I bet that Activison would doing well for BD-ROM without cell processor.

How about GD-ROM for Dreamcast? That's what Sega make on own disc, same with Sony for PS3 and some game developers are doing fine without cell processor.

What they tried to tell you about why developers have differcult time to make games for PS3....

Developers have hard time to programming their games to use ALL cell processors to do specified tasks such as graphics, data, and physhics. Xbox 360 and Wii run on a single processors like consoles in past generations. PS3's cell processor contains 1 PPE and 7 SPEs. It's like if they're beginners try to programming the professional operating system for a droid to function on its own.
Sony press game developers against their 'future' gaming era which put them in too much stress.

P.S. Computers begin to run on dual, 64-bits, or 'duo' processors (instructed by Intel) and double video cards (ATI and nVidia). Dont insult computers as non-gaming consoles. They're important to some genres like RTS and MMORPG games.

It's new to game developers for PS3 with cell processor then they will get usually soon but I just found out from Playstation forum and they said Sega is doing well with cell processor.

SEGA had past experiences with hardware things since they made consoles and arcades before Dreamcast failed. That's fine for them.
But most of gaming developers are software programmers which doesnt know much about computer science.

i ll be doing this an simple way buy it get warranty for it if its defective go back get brand spanking new one besides aint it usual for an launched console to have an sort of an bugs in it? i m sure teh 360 does have problem when first launched then they made better versions

Sony is supposed to help them but Sony is doing great to develop new games with cell processor and how about e-mail to Ken to need help with third party developers to handle with cell processor.

That's would nice if Sony would help them.

I feel that next-gen gaming after Wii and 360 are over then MS and Nintendo would develop new console with cell processor if Sony is doing successful but that can be happen.

Loading time on PS3 is much faster than 360 does. :eek3:

I doubt that. I wouldn't be surprised if both Microsoft and Nintendo decide to go with Intel's Core technology. You see, Intel is going all the way to 80 Cores meaning a teraflop of performance. Right now, only Duo-Core processors are out. 3.0 GHz can only do 0.006% of a teraflop... but they are going to bring the Quad-Core processors out soon, after that... they'll just keep adding more cores till they reach 80 cores!

Now that's mind-blowing.

I mean, a teraflop! Wow.

What's issues with cell processor?

I love to see your answer.
