The next-generation disc format wars between the Sony-backed Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD format will officially see a joint front with the console wars opened this holiday season. Microsoft has announced that the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 will arrive in North America, UK, France, and Germany in mid-November, right around Sony's planned US launch of the Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3.

When it hits stores in North America, the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player should retail for $199.99. Gamers in the UK can expect the player to run them £129.99 ($245), while those in France and Germany can expect to pay 199.99 euros ($254) for the hardware. All these prices have been called "estimated retail prices" by Microsoft, which noted that the actual retail price may vary.

A movie-playing machine with no movies to play wouldn't make much sense, so Microsoft is also throwing in a copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong on HD-DVD, and an Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote as well. That's the film version of the giant ape's adventure and not the Ubisoft game adaptation--Microsoft has previously said the HD-DVD will be used only for movies.

It last week's Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft announced its plans for the Japanese release of the HD-DVD add-on. It will be launched there on November 22, and will retail for 20,790 yen ($177), including tax.

For movie fans, EDGE is right about PS3 is cheaper than 360 for all conclusion including gamers need games, movies, network adapter and cooler equipment.

I bet that Sony will going fix the PS3 to prevent overheating before shipping in USA.

Also, if gamers don't need movies then no reason to buy HD-DVD add-on and that unlike what PS3 does because PS3 make all games in BD formant.

I'm sure it gonna be 1 out of 10,000 make PS3 cause flame over house. heh

That's only if people don't read instruction manual then it will risk to start overheating or flame, it happen to most game consoles but few cases got issues with overheating or flame except for Xbox 360.

HDMI input is the least of my interests.

You can get component cable to watch movies instead of HDMI.

Require to get HDTV but if want watch HD-DVD movies on SDTV then would no different resolution with DVD.

Erm, I dont think HD-DVD player would work on my SDTV since it requires high definiton mode...unless you have proof that it would still work on either SDTV or HDTV?

You can try on computer monitor if can get true HD and check between DVD and HD-DVD.

DVD on computer monitor (flat panel LCD) is much better resolution than SDTV.

Also same with portable DVD player and resolution is much better than SDTV too.
